What we know

We found one finished hands-on test of the E50i, from HACF, a French Home Assistant community site whose writer used it in a 10 by 5 metre pool. The floor came out spotless on every cycle length, the waterline was well kept, and the filter was easy to rinse. The tester disliked the weight out of the water and wasn't convinced the filter light uses a real sensor. Everything else here comes from the Maytronics listing, so steps, leaves and long-term reliability are still open questions.

HACF, hands-on (Tested in a 10 x 5m pool)

A spotless floor in a home test

HACF tested it in a 10 by 5 metre pool with a diamond-shaped floor, a 1-metre band and a 30cm-deep ledge. Whatever cycle length it chose, the floor came out clean with no visible particles. The waterline was well kept too, although the robot didn't always run along it from side to side the way some models do. The shallow ledge got little attention, which the tester put down to the low water level.

Easy filter, uncertain full-filter light

The filter lifts out from the top and just needs a rinse with a hose, which HACF found simple and pleasant. Maytronics lists a full-filter indicator that tells you when to empty it. The tester couldn't tell whether that light uses a real sensor or simply counts the hours the robot spends in the water, and suspected the latter. So after a heavy day of leaves, check the basket yourself anyway.

App control, and Home Assistant

Because it stays plugged in, the E50i stays on Wi-Fi between runs, and HACF could control it from anywhere through the MyDolphin Plus app, which offers cycle choice, scheduling and joystick steering. The tester then used an unofficial community integration to run it from Home Assistant, triggering night-time cleans and phone alerts. That integration goes through Maytronics' cloud servers, so it needs a constant internet connection, and Maytronics doesn't support it.

Heavier than the spec sheet says

Maytronics lists the robot at 8.35kg with a 17-metre cable. HACF weighed it at 10.2kg and reported an 18-metre cable, and named the weight out of the water as its first complaint. A caddy comes in the box and made moving and storing it easy. The listing also shows a pick-up mode that parks it at the pool edge after a cycle, which makes lifting it out simpler.

Our take

Should you buy the E50i?

Best for: In-ground pools whose owners want scheduled cleaning from an app. Skip it if: You do not want a power cable trailing into the pool.

It suits a mid-sized to large in-ground pool in Europe if you want a corded robot you can schedule and forget, and it's a good fit for anyone running Home Assistant. If you want a Dolphin with more test results behind it, the Nautilus CC Plus impressed three testers. If a cable at the poolside bothers you, look at the cordless Dolphin EON 100.

The E50i is the top corded model in Dolphin's European E-line, above the E35i and E40i. It plugs into the mains, scrubs the floor, walls and waterline with two active brushes, and filters through a fine and an ultra-fine layer in one top-loading basket. The 'i' means Wi-Fi: you run it through the MyDolphin Plus app, which adds a weekly timer, delayed start and manual steering, and it waits at the edge when it's done.

That one finished home test, from HACF, was positive: a spotless floor, a well-kept waterline and a filter that's easy to rinse. The catch is weight, as it's heavier to lift out than the spec sheet suggests.

Dolphin's US Explorer E50 has a very similar spec sheet, but it's sold as a separate product with its own number and a shorter warranty.

The questions people ask about this one

Does it climb walls and clean the waterline?

Yes. Maytronics lists floor, wall and waterline cleaning with two active brushes, per the specifications. In its home test, HACF found the waterline well kept, though the robot didn't always run along it from side to side.

Will it work in an above-ground pool?

Maytronics lists it for in-ground pools of most shapes up to 15 metres, per the specifications. The HACF test mentions rigid-walled above-ground pools too, but that isn't on the maker's listing, so check with your dealer first.

How do I clean the filter?

Lift the basket out of the top, unclip the bottom and rinse it, per the specifications. HACF found this easy. A full-filter light warns you when it needs emptying, though the tester suspected it's based on running time rather than a real sensor.

Does it need an app?

You can start it from the power supply, but the weekly timer, delayed start and manual steering live in the MyDolphin Plus app, per the specifications. HACF found the app clear and quick, over Wi-Fi at home or Bluetooth at the poolside.

How do I get it out of the pool?

A pick-up mode brings it to the pool edge at the end of a cycle, per the specifications, and you lift it out by the handle. HACF found it heavy when full of water, at 10.2kg on its own scales.

Why consider it: Three independent testers found it cleans floors and walls quickly, with filters that are easy to empty.

The compromise: It sometimes sticks on steps, and testers disagree about whether it cleans the waterline.

Why consider it: Another corded robot with Wi-Fi control, and both testers praised its cleaning and filterless canister.

The compromise: Neither tester could make its tug-the-cable recall work.

Why consider it: Testers found this cordless Dolphin cleans floors and the waterline well and never got stuck.

The compromise: It's heavy to lift out, and it gives steps only a quick pass.
