What we know

The closest full review is of the D20 Pro Plus, a sibling with an extending side brush and an extra obstacle sensor. Just A Dad Approved used that robot for three months and rated its vacuuming and hair handling well, but found obstacle avoidance average and advised skipping the mop. Vacuum Wars separately mentions a strong D20 Plus carpet-sand result in a buying guide. We use the Pro Plus test as background rather than counting it towards this model.

Carpet results from two models

Just A Dad Approved praised carpet cleaning and resistance to hair tangles on the D20 Pro Plus. Vacuum Wars separately mentions a strong D20 Plus carpet-sand result in a buying guide. The two models share some specifications, but the D20 Plus has a fixed side brush rather than an extending one. Take the Pro Plus result as useful background, and the carpet-sand mention as a good early sign for this model.

Treat it as vacuum-only

The D20 Plus uses a detachable cloth under a 350ml water tank, with no mop lift listed in the specifications, and Dreame tells owners to take it off before cleaning carpet. Just A Dad Approved was unimpressed with mopping on the Pro Plus and preferred using that robot as a vacuum. Given the cloth can't lift either, it's safest to plan on using it as a vacuum.

Misses some floor clutter

Just A Dad Approved rated obstacle avoidance 6 out of 10 on the Pro Plus, which has an extra obstacle sensor, and found it struggled in heavily cluttered rooms. The D20 Plus doesn't list that sensor in the specifications, so don't expect it to do better. Clear cables, socks and toys before running it, especially in cluttered rooms.

Months between bag changes

Dreame says the dock empties the 500ml bin into a 5-litre bag and claims up to 150 days between bag changes, per the specifications. That's a maximum, and the real interval depends on how much dirt you have and how often it runs. Just A Dad Approved liked the Pro Plus's convenience and simple app setup, but that was a different version. On the D20 Plus you still look after the brushes, filters and mop by hand.

What's not checked yet

Nobody has published a full review of the D20 Plus itself, so the Pro Plus test from Just A Dad Approved stands in for now. Still to check on this exact model: how well it avoids clutter without the Pro Plus's extra sensor, whether the fixed side brush reaches corners and edges as well, how much the drag-behind cloth actually lifts, and how its carpet cleaning holds up beyond the sand result Vacuum Wars mentions.

Our take

Should you buy the D20 Plus?

Best for: Homes wanting regular vacuuming with a bin that empties itself. Skip it if: You want a stronger record in independent tests before buying.

It looks a promising budget vacuum on paper, but wait for reviews of this version before buying. The Dreame D10 Plus Gen 2 and the Tapo RV30 Max Plus have longer track records.

The D20 Plus is Dreame's budget self-emptying robot, a step up from the D10 Plus Gen 2. Its dock empties the bin into a bag with a claimed life of up to 150 days. The twin rollers are designed to reduce hair tangles. Its detachable mop is a damp cloth dragged behind the robot, with no lifting mechanism, so remove it before carpet cleaning.

Its closest relative is the D20 Pro Plus, which adds an extending side brush and a different obstacle sensor. Just A Dad Approved used that model for three months and liked its vacuuming and hair handling, but found obstacle avoidance average and advised skipping the mop. Without that extra sensor, clear floor clutter before each run on the D20 Plus. The remaining specifications come from Dreame.

The questions people ask about this one

What extra do I get with the Pro Plus?

Per the specifications, the D20 Pro Plus adds a side brush that reaches out into corners and a 3D structured-light sensor for spotting obstacles. Suction, brush, bin, bag and battery are the same. Just A Dad Approved tested the Pro Plus, and nobody has tested the D20 Plus's obstacle handling or fixed side brush yet.

Can it leave the mop off for carpet?

You have to take it off yourself. The pad is a detachable plate with no lifting listed, and Dreame recommends removing it before cleaning carpets, per the specifications. Just A Dad Approved suggests leaving the mop off altogether and using it as a vacuum.

Will it avoid cables and pet mess?

Don't count on it. Just A Dad Approved rated the Pro Plus's avoidance 6 out of 10 and found it struggled with cluttered floors. The D20 Plus lacks the Pro Plus's obstacle sensor, per the specifications, and nobody has tested how it copes, so clear the floor before each run.

How often do I have to empty or refill anything?

Dreame claims up to 150 days between changes of the 5-litre bag, per the specifications, but a busy home may fill it sooner. You still check brushes and filters, and for mopping you refill the robot's tank and wash and dry the pad yourself. The convenience score in the Pro Plus review is for that model.

D10 Plus Gen 2

Why consider it: Three testers found it cleans hard floors well, maps quickly and needs emptying only every couple of months.

The compromise: It's weak on thick carpet and runs over cables and socks.

Tapo RV30 Max Plus
Tapo · £179.99

RV30 Max Plus

Why consider it: Fast mapping, a compact self-emptying dock and a PCMag Editors' Choice for budget robots.

The compromise: Fine grit and pet hair on carpet were harder for it, and the mop is a light wipe.

ECOVACS DEEBOT N20 PLUS

DEEBOT N20 PLUS

Why consider it: Empties into a bagless container, so there are no bags to buy, and it vacuums well for the money.

The compromise: It can't deal with clutter and its mop is basic.
