Automower 430X NERA
2 independent reviewsRead the findings →Husqvarna's discontinued big-lawn mower, which can run without a perimeter wire. It suits very large, fairly open lawns and leaves a superb finish. But it bumps into things rather than seeing them, and going wire-free takes extra kit and fuss.

What reviewers found
M3's test is still in progress. What we cite from it below comes from the parts already published and may change, and it doesn't count towards our two-review minimum yet.
There are three hands-on tests, two of them set up by professional installers. M3 ran it on a 3,000m² plot with a steep bank and gave it 4 out of 5. Ljud & Bild scored it 5 out of 6 for very large gardens, and EFTM followed it for 508 hours on a rural property and gave it 85%. All three praise the cut. M3 and Ljud & Bild agree obstacle handling is basic, and EFTM shows holes trap it more than slopes do. An owner on Owner on Reddit adds a warning about stay-out zones.

Cut quality and edges
Reviewers rate it highlyLjud & Bild found the lawn beautifully and evenly cut, even taking out moss at the lowest height, and the tester at EFTM had never seen the property look so good after 508 hours of mowing.
Setup and boundaries
Mixed resultsBoth tests used professional installers. Ljud & Bild says it isn't designed for owners to install themselves, and wire-free running needs a paid add-on kit. On EFTM's property, the owner could adjust the boundaries himself afterwards.
Navigation
Reviewers rate it highlyEFTM saw it cover a large rural property with no trouble from its overall layout, needing less help over time, and Ljud & Bild found it fast and stable. Getting trapped in holes is covered under slopes.
Slopes and rough ground
Not enough evidenceOnly EFTM reported on rough ground: undulations were fine, but foot-sized holes trapped it and it sometimes slipped on wet grass. No other review we use tested slopes.
Obstacles and safety
Not enough evidenceOnly Ljud & Bild judged obstacles. It doesn't see them in advance but bumps gently into them, then finds a way round, sending collision alerts for garden furniture. No other review we use tested this.
Weather
Not enough evidenceNone of the reviews we use tested it in the rain. EFTM notes it sometimes slips on wet grass.
App and software
Reviewers rate it highlyLjud & Bild liked the app's many smart settings, such as spiral mowing and a weather timer, though it sent a lot of notifications. On EFTM's property, the owner found it intuitive and easy without needing help.
Upkeep
Not enough evidenceNone of the reviews we use has covered blade changes or cleaning yet.
Reliability and support
Not enough evidenceOnly EFTM ran it long-term, over 508 hours, and found it got stuck less often once holes were filled. No other review we use has reported on durability or support.
Value
Mixed resultsEFTM calls it a no-brainer for a large property if you have the money. Ljud & Bild found price its biggest drawback, with wire-free running an extra kit on top, and only worth it for a really big lawn.
Verdicts come from independent, hands-on, finished reviews. An area needs at least two of them before we say more than “Not enough evidence”. We don't score robots ourselves. How this works
A superb finish, even on huge plots
M3 found the lawn very evenly and finely cut, and after a week of checking the edges it said the promised 2–3cm accuracy held up. Ljud & Bild described the lawn as beautifully cut and completely even, and it dealt with moss at the lowest height setting. The tester at EFTM had never seen the property look so good, with the mower set to cover around twice its rated area. None of the three has a complaint about the cut.
Holes stop it, slopes don't
The plot M3 used includes a 45–50% bank, and the mower drove it without complaint. It got stuck a couple of times in the first week, in a hole dug by wild boar. EFTM reported the same pattern: undulations were fine, but holes about the size of a foot or bigger trapped it, and it sometimes slipped on wet grass. Walk the lawn and fill the holes before you blame the mower.
It bumps rather than sees
There's no camera. M3 found its radar-based detection hit and miss. Sometimes it slowed and went round objects, and sometimes it pushed a plastic watering can several metres, though it did approach trees and fixed obstacles gently. Ljud & Bild got repeated collision alerts from garden furniture and joked that sunbathers might get a visit. Clear toys and loose items off the lawn, and keep pets and children off it while it's working.
The reference station needs height
Wire-free running depends on a reference station with a clear view of the sky. M3 mounted it on the roof, and says it needs roughly a 135-degree open view; once, the mower lost contact behind some bushes and wandered a metre outside its area. The installer at Ljud & Bild fixed it to the house gable, and EFTM called the roof unit critical on a big property. M3 still judged it the most stable wire-free system it had tested, though it doubted the add-on was worth its cost.
Check the stay-out zone rules
An owner on Owner on Reddit, moving up from an older 330X, liked how the NERA spread its work across a complicated garden and valued the app's zone controls. The mower kept getting trapped in a sloping stay-out area, though. In a later reply the owner accepted there's a rule about where that kind of boundary can go, and said they'd reused their old wires rather than installing EPOS. Ask your installer how exclusion zones work before drawing them yourself.
Our take
Should you buy the Automower 430X NERA?
Best for: Large, open lawns with a clear view of the sky. Skip it if: Toys, hoses or other small objects are often left on the grass.
For a very large, fairly open lawn with a dealer nearby, the reviews make a strong case. It cut beautifully, kept going for hundreds of hours in one test and climbed a steep bank in another. If children or pets use the lawn while it runs, or you'd rather buy a model Husqvarna still sells, look at the 430V NERA or the all-wheel-drive 435X AWD NERA instead.
The 430X NERA was Husqvarna's first large-garden Automower that could work without a perimeter wire. Add the EPOS kit and a reference station fixed high on the house, and it follows boundaries you draw in the app. Without them, it's a conventional wired Automower. Husqvarna's UK site now lists it as no longer available, and the 430V NERA is the nearest model in the current range.
The trade-off was always cost and fuss. The wire-free kit was an extra, dealer installation was the norm, and obstacle detection is basic: testers saw it slow down for some things and push or nudge others. If you do find one for sale, check whether the EPOS kit and reference station are included, because without them you'll be laying wire.
Before you buy
The questions people ask about this one
Does it need a boundary wire?
Only if you skip the EPOS kit. Without the add-on, Ljud & Bild points out, it's an ordinary wired robot. With the kit and a reference station, it follows virtual boundaries drawn in the app, and Husqvarna lists both options in the specifications.
Does it need a clear view of the sky?
Its reference station does. M3 says it should sit high with roughly a 135-degree clear view, and saw the mower lose contact once behind dense bushes. All three tests mounted the station on a roof or gable.
Will it cope with my slope?
Husqvarna rates it for 50% inside the lawn and 25% at the boundary, per the specifications. M3 ran it up a 45–50% bank without trouble. Holes and dips are the bigger risk: EFTM found foot-sized holes could trap it.
Will it avoid toys and garden furniture?
Not reliably. M3 saw it steer round some objects and push others, including a plastic watering can. Ljud & Bild found it only notices things by touching them, then finds a way round. Keep the lawn clear while it runs.
Will the neighbours hear it?
Very quiet. Husqvarna quotes 56 dB(A) in the specifications, Ljud & Bild called it almost silent, and M3 described it gliding along quietly and discreetly on schedule. You're unlikely to hear it from next door.
Alternatives
Other robot lawn mowers to compare.

Automower 430V NERA
Why consider it: Husqvarna's current wire-free model for large lawns, and early owners say it handles slopes and big trees.
The compromise: Owners find map changes awkward, and some edits mean standing near the mower.

Automower 435X AWD NERA
Why consider it: All-wheel drive and an articulated body for slopes up to 70%, on Husqvarna's figures, across up to 5,000m².
The compromise: Owner evidence is thin, and one had repeated errors in a heatwave until mowing moved to cooler hours.

A 5000
Why consider it: Wire-free, satellite-guided and rated for up to 7,000m² and 50% slopes.
The compromise: The only owner feedback is a brief follow-up after several outings, so little is known about everyday running.
