What we know

Owner comments on Zodiac's owner review site call the RE 4700 iQ comfortable and easy to use, though they're short and hosted by the brand. Per Zodiac and its Zodiac, it runs on tracks with helix brushes, cleans the floor, walls and waterline of pools up to 12 x 6 metres, and catches dirt in a two-stage filter that lifts out from the top. The iAquaLink app starts it, steers it and triggers a lift function that makes it lighter to pull out.

Tracks and helix brushes

Unlike Zodiac's four-wheel-drive Vortex and Alpha models, the Voyager runs on tracks with helix-shaped brushes, per the Zodiac. Zodiac says its sensors and design give excellent coverage and agility in any pool shape or surface, and that it cleans the floor, walls and waterline of pools up to 12 x 6 metres in a two-and-a-half-hour cycle. It cleans a 23cm strip per pass.

Two-stage filter, emptied from the top

Debris goes through a two-stage filter, 150 microns then 60 microns, in a 4-litre canister, per the Zodiac. If you only need one layer, simple 100 and 200-micron filters are sold separately. The filter comes out from the top, and a backlit window shows how full it is, which Zodiac says makes daily use easier. Cyclonic suction is meant to keep it from clogging.

App control and the lift function

In the iAquaLink app you can start and stop cycles, steer it by remote control, change the cycle time and watch its progress, per the Zodiac. The Lift System sends it to the waterline of the wall you pick and pushes water out so it's lighter to pull out. It weighs 8kg dry, lighter than the 9.5kg Vortex OV 5480 iQ. You only get two cycle types, floor only or floor, walls and waterline.

Still to be proven

Beyond brief owner comments on Zodiac's owner review site, we couldn't find anyone who tested the RE 4700 iQ and reported back. So the main questions are open: how well the tracks and helix brushes cover the pool, how it handles steps or a deep-end slope, whether the two-stage filter catches fine dirt without clogging, how often it needs emptying under trees, and how reliably the app connects at the pool.

Our take

Should you buy the Voyager RE iQ?

Best for: Pools where sand, pollen and fine dirt are the main problem. Skip it if: You want a stronger record in independent tests before buying.

consider it if you want app control and fine filtering for a medium pool and buy through a Zodiac dealer, accepting that you're relying on Zodiac's claims. For a bigger pool the Alpha RA 6900 iQ is rated for far more water, and for a corded app robot with tests behind it the Hayward AquaVac 650 is the safer choice.

The RE 4700 iQ is the top model in Zodiac's Voyager range. It runs on tracks rather than wheels, with helix-shaped brushes at the front, and a control box by the pool powers it through an 18-metre cable with a swivel against tangles. A two-stage filter lifts out from the top, with a backlit window so you can see when it's full. The iAquaLink app starts and stops it, adjusts the cycle time and triggers the Lift System, which parks it at the waterline and pushes water out so it's lighter to pull from the pool.

Owner comments on Zodiac's own review site are brief and positive, calling it comfortable and easy to use. Zodiac rates it for pools up to 12 x 6 metres, with a two-and-a-half-hour cycle for floor, walls and waterline and a floor-only cycle. The trade-off is choice: it has only two cycle types, where the Vortex OV 5480 iQ offers more.

The questions people ask about this one

Does it climb walls and clean the waterline?

Zodiac says it cleans the floor, walls and waterline in a two-and-a-half-hour cycle, per Zodiac, and there's also a floor-only cycle. We couldn't find a test of how well it climbs or scrubs yet.

How do I clean the filter?

The 4-litre filter canister lifts out from the top, and a backlit window shows when it's full, per the specifications. It has two layers, 150 and 60 microns, which you rinse out. Zodiac also sells single 100 and 200-micron filters.

How do I get it out of the water?

From the app, the Lift System sends it to the waterline of the wall you choose and pushes out water so it's lighter to lift, per the specifications. It weighs 8kg dry and comes with a trolley. How well that works in practice is untested.

Will it work in an above-ground pool?

Zodiac lists in-ground pools and above-ground pools with rigid walls, of any shape, floor and surface, up to 12 x 6 metres, per the specifications. That rules out soft-sided above-ground pools.

Do I need the app?

It comes with a control unit, but the iAquaLink app adds remote control, cycle-time changes, progress tracking and the lift function, per the specifications. Zodiac says the app also delivers automatic software updates.

Zodiac

OV 5480 iQ

Why consider it: Zodiac's four-wheel-drive Vortex model for the same pool size, with app scheduling, more cycle choices and a 5-litre filter.

The compromise: It's heavier at 9.5kg, has a single filter layer, and it's also untested.

Hayward AquaVac 650

AquaVac 650

Why consider it: A corded Wi-Fi robot that both testers praised for its cleaning and its filterless canister.

The compromise: Neither tester could make its tug-the-cable recall work.

Dolphin Premier

Premier

Why consider it: A long-running corded Dolphin with a choice of filters, including a big leaf bag, and testers rate its waterline scrubbing highly.

The compromise: It has no app, and it's heavy to lift out.
