Our take
iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo
A capable vacuum-and-mop package that owners generally like for everyday cleaning, but the mop is better for maintenance than deep scrubbing.
Vacuuming, mapping, pet-hair pickup and the self-emptying dock get good feedback.
Some owners report dock-emptying problems, light mopping pressure and promised smart-home features arriving slowly or inconsistently.
Homes prioritising perfectedge extending mop.
Buyers who want a basic vacuum without mopping, advanced navigation or dock automation.
- PerfectEdge extending mop
- Heat-drying AutoWash dock
What reviewers found
The Plus 505 Combo has encouraging home-test evidence for daily dirt, pet hair and mopping. Its main compromises concern the app, frequent water-tank attention and mop pads that stay attached when crossing carpet.
Daily cleaning holds up well
Tom’s Guide used the 505 in a home with a toddler and dog and praised pickup, corner cleaning and routine mopping. AfterDawn’s several-month test also found it effective against winter grit and ordinary household dust. Together these observations provide a more useful picture than the suction specification alone.
[1][2]Navigation is generally capable
Tom’s Guide liked fast mapping and straightforward operation. AfterDawn found infrequent interruptions overall, though reflective chair legs, a light rug and an occasional shoelace caused trouble. This supports regular automated runs in a reasonably prepared home, without implying every small object will be avoided.
[1][2]Thick carpets and water use need thought
AfterDawn noted that the mop pads lift but cannot be left at the dock automatically, limiting suitability for plush carpets. It also found that generous mop-washing water use and relatively small tanks required frequent refilling and emptying. Dock automation changes the maintenance tasks rather than removing them.
[2]The app is the less polished part
Tom’s Guide encountered occasional bugs and an underwhelming spot-cleaning mode. AfterDawn found the evolving interface less intuitive than expected, with limited direct control over some settings. Both reviews also draw attention to dock noise. Locating the base away from a quiet work area makes the automated routine easier to live with.
