Which iRobot Roomba should you buy?

Roomba is the name that made robot vacuums a category, and the range is now the hardest on this site to research. Both models below are sold on iRobot's UK store at prices we confirmed. Neither has the depth of independent testing the Chinese brands attract, and one of them we could find no credible review for at all.

  2. The reviewed one

    iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo

Tom's Guide and Trusted Reviews have both tested it, which makes it the better-evidenced Roomba even though its dock is the less capable of the two. £699 and out of stock direct when we checked; iRobot's own page shows a 4.52 out of 5 customer rating from 317 buyers, which is a retailer rating rather than an expert score.

The range, decoded

What the names mean in the UK line-up, and which suffixes change the machine.

Roomba Max

The current flagship line. Max models carry the AutoWash dock and the newest navigation.

Roomba Plus

The mid-range. Same dock family, fewer of the newest features.

Combo

Any Roomba that mops as well as vacuums. A Roomba without 'Combo' in the name does not mop.

A warning about model numbers

iRobot uses different SKUs per country — the Max 775's UK product code is X285242 and the US one is X285020. A review or price for one is not valid for the other, which is why we check the UK page specifically.

Questions people ask about iRobot

Which Roomba should I buy in the UK?

The Max 775 Combo at £599 is the more capable machine and the better price. The Plus 505 Combo at £699 is the one independent reviewers have actually tested. If published evidence matters most to you, that difference is the decision.

Are Roombas still worth it?

On price and specification the Max 775 competes with the Chinese flagships. What it lacks is their volume of independent testing — and a thin evidence base is exactly what this site is built to show rather than paper over.

What does Combo mean on a Roomba?

That it mops as well as vacuums. Both models here are Combos, and both use a roller mop rather than spinning pads.

Why is the customer rating not shown as a score?

Because 4.52 out of 5 from 317 buyers on iRobot's own store is a retailer rating, not an independent test. We keep the two apart, and we only show expert scores where an outlet published one.
