What reviewers found

Three tests, and none was won over. Les Numériques put it through its lab tests, TechRadar lived with it for just over a week in a home with two Labradors and two cats, and Tech Advisor tested it on hard floors and carpet. All three rate vacuuming as its strongest point, call the mop basic and had trouble with the app. The bin splits them: Tech Advisor liked going weeks without emptying it, while TechRadar and Les Numériques found it messy and awkward to empty.

Les Numériques, lab test, Apr 2025 · TechRadar, hands-on, Just over a week, Jul 2025 · Tech Advisor, hands-on, Jul 2025

  • Hard floors

    Mixed results

Les Numériques measured strong hard-floor pickup, and TechRadar saw rice and muesli collected, though flour stayed in the cracks. Tech Advisor needed a second pass for debris the side brush flicked away, and Les Numériques found it stops short of walls and corners.

  • Carpet and rugs

    Mixed results

Fine on thin carpet, weaker on thick rugs. Les Numériques measured near-complete pickup on thin carpet but much less on a long-pile rug, while Tech Advisor and TechRadar both found carpet pickup good in their homes.

  • Pet hair

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use ran a proper hair test. TechRadar, with two Labradors and two cats, had to empty the bin after eight days rather than the claimed 60.

  • Mopping

    Reviewers found problems

The mop is a basic damp cloth. Tech Advisor found it spread its test mess around rather than lifting it, and Les Numériques barely touched carbon and lipstick marks. With the mop fitted, TechRadar saw it fail to cross a rug for ten minutes.

  • Navigation and obstacles

    Reviewers found problems

It doesn't detect cables or small objects. TechRadar watched it drag a phone cable along, Tech Advisor had it stuck on piano feet and table legs and swallow a glove, and Les Numériques found it misses corners and under furniture.

  • Dock and upkeep

    Mixed results

There's no emptying dock, because dirt is compacted inside the robot. Tech Advisor liked going weeks without emptying it, but TechRadar and Les Numériques found the bin awkward to empty without spilling, and Les Numériques saw the filter clog quickly.

  • App and software

    Reviewers found problems

All three testers were frustrated by the app. Les Numériques found it slow and unstable, TechRadar found a zones menu that did nothing and an imprecise spot-clean tool, and Tech Advisor had settings that didn't save.

  • Noise

    Reviewers found problems

Les Numériques measured 58dB at standard power, noisy for a robot, partly from the compacting paddle scraping the bin, and TechRadar found the high-pitched motor audible from metres away.

  • Reliability and support

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use has run it long-term or judged iRobot's support, and TechRadar's test lasted just over a week.

  • Value

    Mixed results

Tech Advisor found it well priced as a space-saving alternative to a self-emptying dock, if you accept compromises. TechRadar suggested looking at rivals in the same price range, such as the Roborock Q5 Pro+, instead.

Verdicts come from independent, hands-on, finished reviews. An area needs at least two of them before we say more than “Not enough evidence”. We don't score robots ourselves. How this works

Decent vacuuming, weak on thick rugs

Les Numériques measured 93% pickup on hard floor at standard power and 97% at maximum, and 98% on thin carpet, but only 72% on a long-pile rug. TechRadar found it collected rice and muesli on both hard floor and carpet, though it left flour in the cracks. Tech Advisor saw good carpet pickup but needed a second pass on hard floor for debris the side brush flicked away. Everyday crumbs are fine, but deep rugs won't come out properly clean.

Big bin, messy to empty

The bin is the reason to buy it, and the reason two testers went off it. TechRadar found the lid doesn't open wide enough to empty without spilling, and with four shedding pets it needed emptying after eight days, not 60. Les Numériques found it awkward to hold over a kitchen bin, and saw the filter, which sits unprotected inside, clog quickly. Tech Advisor was happier, valuing weeks without emptying. It suits dust more than pet hair.

The mop is for light wiping

Tech Advisor found the damp cloth spread its test mess around rather than lifting it, and says it only works for light upkeep. Les Numériques got dried soda and oil off with a second pass and the scrubbing mode, but barely touched carbon and lipstick marks. With the mop fitted, TechRadar watched it spend ten minutes failing to cross a rug before giving up, while Tech Advisor saw it drag the wet cloth over carpet edges. Don't count on it for kitchen spills.

Tidy up before it runs

Les Numériques recorded 75% debris collection in its navigation test, above average, but found it stops short of walls and misses corners and under furniture. It doesn't detect cables or small objects, and the others found the same. TechRadar saw it avoid two large dog toys, plough through the rest and drag a phone cable along. Tech Advisor had it stuck on piano feet, an armchair base and thin table legs, and it sucked up a glove. Clear the floor first.

Noisy, with a lagging app

Les Numériques measured 58 dB(A) at standard power, noisy for a robot, partly from the compacting paddle scraping the bin. TechRadar said the high-pitched motor could be heard from metres away. The app frustrated all three: Les Numériques found it slow, TechRadar found a zones menu that did nothing and a spot-clean tool too imprecise to use, and Tech Advisor had settings that didn't save. Battery life is fine, with Les Numériques getting two hours 15 minutes at standard power.

Our take

Should you buy the Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo?

Best for: Small, tidy flats needing regular vacuuming. Skip it if: You have a pet that sheds heavily or lots of long hair.

buy it only if there's no space for a self-emptying dock, your floors are mostly hard and there is little pet or long hair to collect. The eufy Omni C20 empties itself and washes its own pads if you can find the room, and the Roborock Q7 M5 is the cheaper choice for pet hair.

The 205 DustCompactor Combo does without an emptying dock. A paddle inside pushes dirt to the back of a large bin, which iRobot says can go up to 60 days between emptyings, so the only thing on the floor is a small charging stand. The laser for mapping is tucked inside the body rather than sitting in a bump on top.

All three testers rated the vacuuming as its strongest point. Les Numériques measured strong pickup on hard floor and thin carpet but much less on a long-pile rug, and TechRadar and Tech Advisor both found carpet pickup good at home. The bin split them. Tech Advisor liked going weeks without emptying it, while TechRadar and Les Numériques found it spills when emptied, and TechRadar, with two Labradors and two cats, had to empty it after eight days. All three found the drag mop basic and the app frustrating, and none saw it detect cables or small objects.

Before you buy

The questions people ask about this one

Will it avoid cables and pet mess?

No. Les Numériques found it doesn't detect cables or small objects, and TechRadar watched it drag a phone cable around and says it's not a robot to leave running with an untrained puppy. Pick up anything on the floor before it starts.

Does it fit under low furniture?

It's 10.1cm tall, per the specifications, and Les Numériques points out that height runs across the whole top rather than a small bump, making it one of the bulkiest robots it has tested. Tech Advisor still found it fitted under most furniture. Measure your gaps first.

Can it cross rugs and raised thresholds between rooms?

Without the mop it's fine: Les Numériques saw it climb its thickest rug and boost suction there. With the mop fitted it avoids carpet, per the specifications, and TechRadar found that meant it couldn't cross rugs between rooms at all. If rugs separate your hard floors, plan on vacuum-only runs.

How often do I have to empty or refill it?

iRobot claims up to 60 days between bin empties, per the specifications, but TechRadar had to empty it after eight days with four shedding pets. You also fill the small water tank and wash the mop cloth yourself, and Les Numériques advises cleaning the filter often because it clogs.

How long does it run on a charge?

Les Numériques measured two hours 15 minutes at standard power, beating iRobot's claim, but under an hour at maximum. It goes back to recharge and picks up where it stopped, and takes about four hours to fill up again, so larger homes will take a while.

Omni C20

Why consider it: A slim robot with a dock that empties the bin and washes the pads, and it's reliably good on hard floors.

The compromise: It can't see small obstacles either, so you still tidy up first.

Roborock Q7 M5 / M5+
Roborock

Q7 M5 / M5+

Why consider it: A budget mapping vacuum that lifts pet hair far better than its price suggests.

The compromise: It bumps into clutter, has a basic drag mop, and you empty the bin yourself.

SwitchBot K11+
SwitchBot

K11+

Why consider it: A tiny robot with one of the smallest self-emptying docks around, for homes short of floor space.

The compromise: Its mop is a wet wipe, and tests disagree sharply on how well it vacuums.
