Short answer
Your robot probably thinks the rug is a drop. Its drop sensors shine light at the floor and measure how much comes back. A black rug absorbs most of that light, so it looks like a staircase edge, and the robot turns away to protect itself.
What you can try
- Check the app. Some robots have a setting that turns off drop detection in specific areas, or that handles carpets differently. Only use it in areas with no stairs nearby.
- Clean the drop sensors. Dirty sensors make the problem worse.
- Try a lighter rug, or one with a light border, in the areas the robot needs to cross.
- Don't cover the sensors. Some owners tape over them. That removes the robot's protection against stairs, and it's not worth the risk in a home with steps.
