Short answer

Start by checking the dock’s power connection and whether the robot sits correctly on it. Then inspect and clean the charging contacts using the instructions for your Roomba and dock. A robot that will not charge does not automatically need a new battery.

01

First, separate docking from charging

Does the robot fail to find the dock, or does it sit on the dock without gaining charge? Those point to different checks. Note any spoken message or charging error number before changing settings. Also write down the full model name from the label: recent Roombas and older ones do not all use the same dock or maintenance instructions.

Check the simple things before resetting it

  1. Check that the power lead is firmly seated at the dock and socket. If you use a switched socket, check the switch too.
  2. Look for a trapped object or dirt stopping the robot sitting in its normal charging position. Follow the manual when placing it on the dock.
  3. Use the charging indication specified for your model. A light that switches off is not, by itself, proof of a failed charge.
  4. If there is an error number, record it. A factory reset is a poor first step because it can remove settings without fixing a contact or power problem.

03

Clean the right parts in the right way

iRobot’s contact-cleaning guide tells owners to unplug the dock and wait 60 seconds before cleaning. Its general instructions use a lightly dampened cloth or melamine foam for contacts, but direct several newer series and dock types to different procedures. Open the guide and choose your model before starting.

  • Do not treat a sensor window like a metal charging contact. The guide specifies a soft, dry cloth for the docking sensor window.
  • Do not spray water or cleaner into the dock or sensor openings. Follow the separate instructions for an Auto-Wash or Auto-Fill dock.
  • If contacts look damaged or discoloured, stop and contact iRobot rather than scraping them or repeatedly forcing the robot onto the dock.

When to ask for help

If the connections and contacts check out, use the official steps for the error you recorded. Reboot instructions and battery access vary, so avoid following a button sequence from a different Roomba. If you see heat damage, a swollen battery or a damaged power lead, stop using the unit and contact support.

  • Have the robot and dock model names, serial number and proof of purchase ready.
  • Send a clear photograph of the contacts and the exact error message, plus the checks you have already tried.
  • Ask whether the issue is covered before buying a battery or dock. A replacement part should match the exact model, not just look similar.

Questions people ask

Should I buy a new battery if my Roomba will not charge?

Not as the first step. A loose power connection, dirty contacts or poor alignment can also prevent charging. Check those and the model-specific error guidance first.

Should I factory-reset a Roomba that is not charging?

Start with power, contact and error checks. Use a reset only when the official instructions for your model call for it, and check whether it will erase maps or settings.
