There are three home tests so far, all in US gardens: How-To Geek on a bumpy, oddly shaped lawn, BGR on a small flat yard, and Techaeris on rough ground with mole holes. All three liked the quick setup, the clean cut and the edge trimmer. All three also found it far too wary of tall grass and weeds. The flatter the lawn, the happier the tester: the flat yard earned a recommendation, the lumpy ones more guarded verdicts. An owner on Reddit owner describes the same pattern.

Nervous around long grass
This is the complaint every tester shares. BGR watched it treat patches of taller grass and weed stems as obstacles and leave them uncut. Techaeris called the sensors skittish, steering round a lone dandelion until an override was drawn in the app. How-To Geek found even the highest obstacle setting left several tufts it refused to cut, and the owner on Reddit owner had to drive it over longer grass by hand. Keep the lawn short, and cut it yourself first after a holiday.
Quick to set up, clean cut
BGR had a 3D map of the garden in about five minutes and found the cut clean and tear-free. Techaeris also mapped in minutes, then drove the mower round the edges with an on-screen joystick to set the borders. How-To Geek only had to screw on the trimmer and brushes, and said it cuts extremely cleanly on flat, even ground. There's no aerial to site and no wire to bury, which is most of the usual setup pain gone.
The trimmer does most of the edging
BGR reckoned the side trimmer did about 75–90% of its strimming, but still needed touch-ups at corners, and found it loud. Techaeris put it at around 90%, while warning it suits lawns with clear borders better than rugged ones, and that rewinding the line is fiddly. On How-To Geek's curving borders, the square body couldn't get the trimmer right up to several stretches. Expect less strimming, not none, and more help on straight edges than on curves.
Holes and bumps catch it out
How-To Geek found it usually worked itself out of tight spots and handled slopes easily, but one deep hole dug by the dogs caught it again and again. Techaeris's front wheels got stuck in several mole holes. The owner on Reddit owner had the front wheels catch on landscaping while the rear wheels spun and dug in. Fill holes and check raised edging before you set it loose. On BGR's small flat yard, none of this came up.
Smaller quirks to live with
Every automatic job has to start from the dock. How-To Geek couldn't start one even six metres away, and because each mower holds one map, it had to carry the Goat to a separate patch of grass and cut it by hand. Its voice alerts were hard to hear, too. BGR disliked scheduling the mowing and trimming separately. Techaeris found the low sensors needed frequent cleaning and noticed shorter battery life in hot weather.

Our take
Should you buy the GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO?
Best for: Fairly flat lawns where trimming the borders is the main chore. Skip it if: Your lawn is steep, soft or full of bumps.
buy it if you have a large, even lawn with clear borders, you mow often and you want most of the strimming done for you. For a lumpy lawn or grass left to grow long, the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD is the better bet, and the GOAT O1200 LiDAR PRO suits smaller lawns.
The A3000 Pro is the top of Ecovacs's garden range. It finds its way with spinning laser scanners rather than satellites, so there's no wire, no aerial, and it keeps going under trees and after dark. The Pro adds a string trimmer to the earlier A3000, spinning out from the side to cut along walls and paths. Its 33cm deck is much wider than the O series.

The questions people ask about this one
Does it need a boundary wire?
No wire and no aerial. It maps the garden with laser scanners and you set the borders in the app, per the specifications. Techaeris drove it round the edges with an on-screen joystick to draw them, and BGR had a first map in about five minutes.
Will it cope with my slope?
Ecovacs rates it for 50% inside the lawn and 20% along a virtual border, per the specifications. How-To Geek said it handled its slopes easily. Holes and raised edging were the bigger problem for testers, so level those out before worrying about the gradient.
What happens when the grass gets long?
It tends to treat tall tufts and weeds as obstacles and go round them. How-To Geek, BGR and Techaeris all saw this, and it left uncut patches each time. Mow it short yourself after a break, then let the robot keep it short.
How close does it cut to the edge?
The side trimmer is the reason to buy it. BGR and Techaeris both said it did roughly three-quarters to nine-tenths of their strimming. On curved borders, though, How-To Geek found the trimmer couldn't reach every stretch, and corners still need a quick tidy.
Can it handle two lawns or a narrow passage?
It needs a gap of at least 90cm to pass between areas, per the specifications. How-To Geek found there's one map per mower and automatic jobs must start from the dock, so a separate patch of grass it can't drive to has to be cut in manual mode.
How noisy is it for neighbours?
Ecovacs quotes 62dB for mowing and 82dB with the trimmer running, per the specifications. How-To Geek found both quiet, but BGR called the trimmer loud. If neighbours are close, schedule trimming for the middle of the day.
