What we know

connect tested the 400m² version of the same camera mower and gave it a Gut (good) seal, while saying the price, app and driving stood in the way of a recommendation. It found the mower unusually quiet and good at spotting small obstacles, but fussy about where the charging station goes and prone to pausing under trees and in passages. Nobody has tested the 600's own battery life or its 600m² rating.

connect, hands-on, Jun 2026 (tested on the smart SILENO sense 400; Tested smart SILENO sense 400, not smart SILENO sense 600. Shared features are useful context, but this version's changed hardware or capacity has not been tested.)

Quieter than anything else tested

connect said it knew of no current robot mower as quiet, describing it creeping round the garden in a whisper. At 9.5kg it's also smaller and lighter than rivals of a similar size. GARDENA rates it at 57dB, per the specifications. That makes it a good fit for small gardens on closely packed streets, where a louder mower could bother the neighbours.

Good at spotting obstacles

The camera reliably picked out even small obstacles in connect's test, including a fallen branch. GARDENA says it mows over leaves but turns away from solid objects such as stones and toys, per the specifications. The camera has no light, though, so connect found it can't drive once dusk falls, even just to get home. Plan mowing for daylight hours.

Setup is fussier than rivals

connect had to move the charging station away from a 10m poplar because the spot in front of it needs a solid satellite fix. GARDENA's own advice asks for open sky at 45 degrees and ideally 6m of clear space in front of the base, which can be hard in a tight garden. Mapping means steering it round the edge and dropping waypoints as you go, and it responded less precisely than the Mammotion and Navimow mowers connect compared it with.

Hesitates under trees and in gaps

connect found the satellite positioning more prone to drop-outs than on Chinese rivals, which showed up as pauses of a few seconds under trees. Narrow gaps caused the same hesitation: GARDENA asks for at least 1m, and a 110cm gap in the test garden took a lot of thinking before it went through. Owners on Leroy Merlin customer reviews are split, with one happy after ten weeks and another reporting missed starts and trips outside the mowing area. If your lawn is shaded or linked by a narrow strip, expect delays.

Edges and height changes

Its blade sits at the back and swings round at the end of each run, so in theory it cuts right up to walls. GARDENA calls this Trim-to-Edge, per the specifications. In practice, connect found it rarely went close to the edge and left a gap of a few centimetres. To change the cutting height you turn the mower over and twist the blade disc, and there are only four settings.

Our take

Should you buy the smart SILENO sense 600?

Best for: Small, fairly flat lawns with a clear view of the sky. Skip it if: You want a mower with independent tests of this exact version.

Consider it if your lawn is small, flat, fairly open to the sky and in a tightly packed street where noise matters, and you'd like a wire-free mower made by a European brand. The one tester found it well behind the best rivals on setup, app and driving, so if you want the smoothest wire-free experience, the Segway Navimow i1 or eufy E15 are better-proven. There is too little independent testing for an overall review label.

The smart SILENO sense is GARDENA's first mower that uses a camera to see where it's going, alongside satellite positioning, so there's no wire to peg round the lawn and no separate aerial to put up. It comes in two sizes, for 400m² and 600m²; this is the bigger one. A SIM card built into the mower keeps it online for life at no extra cost, so you can control it from the app anywhere.

What you get is a light, compact, very quiet mower that recognises toys, stones and branches and turns away from them. What you give up is speed and reach: at 16cm, its cut is narrow, it's rated for slopes of only 25%, and it can't mow in the dark. The charging station also needs a clear view of the sky.

Below it sits the wired SILENO city; the smart SILENO free is GARDENA's wire-free model for bigger lawns.

Before you buy

The questions people ask about this one

Does it need a boundary wire?

No. It uses a camera and satellite positioning, and you draw the boundary in the app by steering it round the lawn, per the specifications. connect found that process fussier than on rival wire-free mowers, because you also have to drop waypoints as you drive.

Does it need a clear view of the sky?

Yes, especially at the charging station. connect had to move the base away from a tall tree, and GARDENA asks for open sky at 45 degrees and ideally 6m clear in front of it. Under trees, the tested mower also paused while it waited for a better fix.

Can it handle two lawns or a narrow passage?

Not easily. GARDENA asks for gaps of at least 1m, and connect saw it hesitate at a 110cm passage. connect also found you can't add a second, separate lawn after setup; you have to include the link between them when you first map the garden.

Will it cope with my slope?

Only a gentle one. GARDENA rates it for 25%, both inside the lawn and at the edge, per the specifications. That's low for a new mower, and nobody has tested it on a slope yet.

Is there a subscription for 4G or anti-theft?

No. The mower has a built-in SIM with free connectivity for life, per the specifications. connect points out that most rivals charge a yearly fee after the first year, so this is a real saving over time.

How noisy is it for neighbours?

Very quiet. GARDENA rates it at 57dB, per the specifications, and connect said it knew of no current robot mower that runs as quietly. It's one of the best reasons to choose it.

GARDENA

SILENO city (250 to 600m², basic and smart)

Why consider it: GARDENA's small wired mower is also very quiet, and both of its testers liked it in narrow strips and awkward layouts.

The compromise: You have to lay a boundary wire, and it leaves about 10cm uncut at the edges.

Segway Navimow

i1 series (i105E, i105N, i108E, i110N)

Why consider it: A small wire-free mower that four reviewers liked for its tidy striped cut and easy app.

The compromise: It leaves a strip at the edges, and its aerial needs open sky.

E15 Robot Lawn Mower

Why consider it: Also camera-guided with no wire, and one tester called it the easiest robot mower it had set up.

The compromise: Testers with bumpy or damp lawns had it slipping and getting stuck.
