Two tests: Trusted Reviews in its home technology lab and Presse-citron in an old 80m² house. Both think it's good value, with strong vacuuming and useful corner reach, and both flag the manual upkeep. Trusted Reviews goes further on mopping, which handled coffee, wine and mud but not dried ketchup, and found long hair wrapped round the brush. Presse-citron found it coped with thick rugs but couldn't get up a small step of about 3cm.

Strong vacuuming, patchy edges
Trusted Reviews found flour on carpet almost all collected after two passes. On hard floor in vacuum-only mode, though, some flour got spread around, and its edge test left quite a lot of dust swirled along the plinth. Presse-citron liked how the extending brush scraped out corners and said it cleaned 80m² in a little over 30 minutes on half its battery. It's good for general dust, and corners come out better than runs along the skirting.
Mopping beats most budget robots
Trusted Reviews didn't expect much and came away impressed. Two passes largely cleared dried coffee, leaving a faint mark, red wine came up completely, and mud was vacuumed then mopped away. Dried ketchup barely shifted. Presse-citron notes Xiaomi advises against detergent, so it's water-only cleaning, which it thinks is fine for touch-ups. Think daily spills, not baked-on messes.
You do the servicing
According to Trusted Reviews, the 430ml bin needs emptying after every clean, the 310ml tank refilling, the pads washing and the filter rinsing regularly, and it can't leave its pads behind for vacuum-only runs. Presse-citron also found emptying the tanks after each use the obvious drawback. The upside, both say, is a small base you can hide under a sofa.
Gets around, but not over steps
It never got stuck for Trusted Reviews, though it tended to climb noisily over the lab's sledge-leg desks. Presse-citron found it avoided walls, furniture and toys, handled rugs including thick ones, and stopped at stairs, but it couldn't get over a step of about 3cm into a bedroom. Xiaomi claims 2cm. Check your thresholds before relying on it to go room to room.
Long hair still wraps round
Despite Xiaomi's anti-tangle brush, Trusted Reviews found a lot of human hair wound round the brush bar, worse than on other robots it has tested. Xiaomi says its Y-shaped roller and anti-tangle side brush cut down on maintenance, and Presse-citron didn't test hair, so this lab result is the only independent check among the reviews we use. With long hair or a moulting pet at home, plan on cutting hair off the brush bar regularly.

Our take
Should you buy the Robot Vacuum S40 Pro?
Best for: Homes with mostly hard floors and a few rugs. Skip it if: You want a dock to empty the bin and wash the mop for you.
The S40 Pro offers spinning-pad mopping without a large dock, if you accept manual bin emptying and pad washing. The X20+ and H50 Pro automate more of that routine, although their tanks and cleaning parts still need attention. For vacuum-only use, compare the S40's current price and read its carpet and hair-tangling results.
The S40 Pro is the top of Xiaomi's charge-only S40 range, above the S40 and S40C. It borrows ideas from pricier robots: two spinning mop pads that lift 10mm on rugs, and arms that swing the side brush and one pad out towards walls and corners. It maps your home with a spinning laser and has a front sensor for obstacles.
The small base only charges. You empty the bin, refill the robot's water tank and wash its pads yourself. That saves dock space, but the robot is still 9.9cm tall. Measure furniture gaps and leave room for movement before expecting it to clean underneath.
If you want the same extending arms with a dock that washes and dries the pads, that's the H50 Pro.

How often do I have to empty or refill anything?

Can it leave the mops in the dock for carpet?
No. The pads lift 10mm when it detects carpet, per the specifications, but Trusted Reviews notes there's no way to drop them off for vacuum-only runs. Xiaomi suggests bypassing carpet thicker than 5mm when mopping, so thick rugs need a separate vacuum-only run.
Can it cross rugs and raised thresholds between rooms?
Rugs were fine for Presse-citron, even thick ones, but it couldn't climb a step of about 3cm. Xiaomi claims it clears 2cm, per the specifications. Trusted Reviews saw it clamber over low desk legs without getting stuck.
Will it avoid cables and pet mess?
Neither test tried cables or pet mess. Trusted Reviews found navigation generally good and never had it stuck, and Presse-citron saw it avoid toys. Xiaomi recommends clearing obstacles before the first mapping run, per the specifications. Until a review we use tests cables, pick them up before every run.
Is it loud?
Trusted Reviews measured 60.4dB at its highest setting, while Presse-citron recorded 69dB in Turbo and about 10dB less in quiet mode. Neither explains its method clearly enough to compare the two directly. Presse-citron also turned down the voice prompts in the app. Expect more noise at stronger suction settings.
