What we know

Per Zodiac and its Zodiac, the RT 3200 is a light corded robot on tracks, with an active brush that loosens dirt on the walls before sucking it up. It cleans the floor and walls of small pools in a two-and-a-half-hour cycle, weighs 5.5kg and has a filter that lifts out from the top. There's no app, no timer and no waterline cleaning. The open questions are how well the tracks and brush clean, whether the small filter copes with a leafy pool, and which pool-size figure is right, because Zodiac's page and leaflet disagree.

Floor and walls, not the waterline

Zodiac says its smart motion system covers the floor and walls, and its brush removes debris stuck to the walls before sucking it up. Neither Zodiac source mentions the waterline, and the Zodiac lists only floor and walls, so plan to wipe the scum line yourself. It runs on caterpillar tracks with two motors and cleans a 17cm strip per pass. For best results in some tiled pools, Zodiac suggests adding a special tile brush, sold separately.

Which pool size is right?

Zodiac gives two figures. The product page on Zodiac says it's for pools up to 9 x 4 metres, while the Zodiac says up to 10 x 5 metres. The leaflet is older, so the page may reflect a revised rating, but Zodiac doesn't explain the change. Both list in-ground pools and above-ground pools with rigid walls, and the cable is 16.5 metres. If your pool is near either limit, check with a dealer before buying, or look at a bigger model.

Light and easy to empty

At 5.5kg, Zodiac calls it one of the lightest robots on the market, which makes lifting it out simple. The 3-litre, 100-micron filter lifts out from the top, so you don't touch the debris, and a clear window shows what's inside. The Zodiac lists very fine, fine and large-debris filters as extras. The standard filter is smaller than on Zodiac's bigger models, so a leafy pool may fill it faster.

Our take

Should you buy the RT 3200?

Best for: Smaller pools whose owners want a lighter robot to lift out. Skip it if: Scrubbing the waterline is your main reason for buying.

consider it for a small, simple pool where you only need the floor and walls done and want a lighter robot to lift out, going by the smaller pool-size figure to be safe. If you want the waterline scrubbed too, look at the Dolphin S200, which one tester found thorough, and for app control Zodiac's Voyager RE 4700 iQ is the step up.

The RT 3200 is the lightweight TornaX model in Zodiac's corded range. It runs on tracks, with an active brush that loosens dirt stuck to the walls before sucking it up. You plug a control box into the mains, drop the robot in and it cleans the floor and walls in a two-and-a-half-hour cycle, catching debris in a filter that lifts out from the top. At 5.5kg it's easy to lift out, and there's no app, no timer and no waterline cleaning.

The catches are the waterline and the pool size. You'll wipe the scum line by hand, and Zodiac's own figures disagree on size: the product page says up to 9 x 4 metres, while the leaflet says bigger. Tiled pools may need an extra tile brush, sold separately.

The questions people ask about this one

Does it climb walls and clean the waterline?

It climbs and brushes the walls, per Zodiac, but Zodiac only claims floor and wall cleaning, not the waterline. If a scum line is your main problem, pick a robot that scrubs the waterline, such as Zodiac's Voyager RE 4700 iQ.

Will it work in an above-ground pool?

Zodiac lists in-ground pools and above-ground pools with rigid walls, per the specifications. The size limit is either 9 x 4 or 10 x 5 metres, depending on which Zodiac source you read, so check your pool fits the smaller figure.

How do I clean the filter?

The 3-litre filter canister lifts out from the top of the robot, so you don't handle the debris, per Zodiac. Rinse the 100-micron filter and put it back. Finer and coarser filters are sold separately, per the specifications.

Does it need an app?

No. It has no app, timer or Wi-Fi. You plug in the control unit and it runs a two-and-a-half-hour cycle of the floor and walls, per the specifications.

How do I get it out of the water?

You lift it out by its handle. There's no lift aid, but at 5.5kg dry Zodiac calls it one of the lightest on the market, per Zodiac. It'll be heavier with water inside.

Dolphin S200
Dolphin

S200

Why consider it: An entry-level corded Dolphin that scrubs the floor, walls and waterline with two brushes, and one tester found it thorough.

The compromise: It has no app either, and owners report repairs after the warranty.

Dolphin E10
Dolphin

E10

Why consider it: Dolphin's cheapest corded robot, and testers found it picks up leaves and dirt well from the floor.

The compromise: It's made for above-ground pools and won't climb walls at all.

Zodiac Voyager RE iQ
Zodiac

Voyager RE iQ

Why consider it: Zodiac's Voyager model adds waterline cleaning, app control, a two-stage filter and a lift function, for pools up to 12 x 6 metres.

The compromise: It's heavier at 8kg, and it's also untested.
