What reviewers found

Two long home tests. TechRadar found it excellent on lightly dirty indoor glass and spot on at detecting frameless edges, but streaky on weathered patio doors. Trusted Reviews was harsher: it took repeated runs and nearly an hour to get three windows clean, and it struggled on a filthy skylight. Both say it saves effort rather than time, and both had to move it between panes. They disagree on how secure it feels, because only one of them saw it fall.

  • Cleaning result

    Mixed results

Clean on light dirt, streaky on grime: TechRadar got indoor glass perfectly clear but weathered patio doors came out streaky. Trusted Reviews had to repeat the whole dry, wet, dry routine before its windows were streak-free.

  • Safety

    Mixed results

Trusted Reviews found the grip limpet-like, and it stayed put and called out a warning when the power was cut. TechRadar, though, saw it drop off a window once for no obvious reason, caught only by the safety rope.

  • Surfaces it suits

    Mixed results

TechRadar found its edge sensors worked on frameless indoor partitions, but it refused a window 32cm wide. Trusted Reviews found it got confused on narrow panes, and the tether snagged a sensor on a skylight.

  • Ease of use

    Mixed results

TechRadar found the remote needed aiming straight at the robot and didn't try the app support it found later. Trusted Reviews used the app to switch off the greetings but still found pad changes and restarts a hassle, so some voice settings can be changed, though the reviews don't cover every alert.

  • Noise

    Reviewers found problems

Both found it loud. Trusted Reviews compared it with a portable vacuum cleaner even with the voice turned off, and TechRadar found its loud, shrill voice prompts irritating.

  • Value

    Mixed results

TechRadar found the price in line with rivals and worthwhile for homes with lots of big glass, but Trusted Reviews felt it was a lot of money for results that disappointed on its windows.

Verdicts come from independent, hands-on, finished reviews. An area needs at least two of them before we say more than “Not enough evidence”. We don't score robots ourselves. How this works

Clear on light dirt, streaky on grime

TechRadar got indoor glass partitions perfectly clear with no smears, but the outside of weathered patio doors came out streaky, with the robot's path and the odd track mark showing. Trusted Reviews had the same problem: after the wet pass its windows were smeared, and the final dry pass didn't fix it. Repeating the whole dry, wet, dry routine did get the glass streak-free in the end. TechRadar found a dry run first helped. It'll keep clean glass clean; plan on a second go for anything neglected.

It saves effort, not time

HOBOT quotes about 2.6 minutes per square metre. TechRadar timed a 1.3 square metre pane at around seven and a half minutes. Add the repeat runs, swapping cloth sets and restarting it when it got confused, and Trusted Reviews spent almost an hour on three windows. Neither reviewer could leave it alone, because it has to be lifted from pane to pane. It earns its keep on glass you'd otherwise need a ladder or a professional for, not windows you can wipe in two minutes.

Frameless edges work; use the rope

TechRadar tested it on indoor partitions with a 4cm gap at the sides, and it stopped short and turned every time. The same reviewer did see it drop off a window once, for no obvious reason, and caught it by the safety rope. Trusted Reviews found the grip limpet-like: with the power pulled, it stayed put and called out a warning. On their skylight, though, the rope snagged an edge sensor, possibly throwing off its route. Always tie the rope off, and keep it clear of the robot.

It wants large, simple panes

TechRadar had it refuse a window 32cm wide, probably because there wasn't room to turn. Trusted Reviews found it got confused on the third of three tall, narrowish windows every time, stopping short of the top until restarted. For them, the hard part was getting it onto the outside of a skylight or top-hinged window, not the cleaning. Measure your panes, and think about how you'll reach the outside before buying it for upstairs glass.

Remote, app and a chatty voice

TechRadar mostly used the remote, which only works when pointed straight at the robot, and found the loud voice prompts couldn't be switched off. They later found app support in HOBOT's Legee app but hadn't tried it. Trusted Reviews connected over Bluetooth, called the app basic, and used it to turn the greetings off. Both found it loud, and Trusted Reviews compared it with a portable vacuum cleaner. Don't expect much from the app beyond settings and updates.

Both reviews cover the S7 Pro. TechRadar's first version said there was no app; it was later corrected.

Our take

Should you buy the S7 Pro?

Best for: Large panes or glass partitions needing regular upkeep. Skip it if: Your windows are split into lots of small panes.

Consider it for regular cleaning of large panes or frameless partitions that you can safely attach it to and retrieve it from. It will not remove the need to finish edges by hand. For smaller panes, check the WINBOT mini 2's minimum glass size. The W2S OMNI's battery station is worth comparing where sockets are awkward.

The S7 Pro is HOBOT's large square window cleaner, and it replaced the S6. Instead of a cloth that just slides over the glass, it has two pads that scrub back and forth up to 600 times a minute, while a fine mist sprays ahead of it. It runs from the mains, with a small backup battery that keeps it stuck to the window for about 20 minutes if the power drops. HOBOT says it can tell where frameless glass ends by sensing air leaking in under it.

The trade-off is size and fuss. It's a big robot, so narrow panes are out, and you still move it from window to window yourself. Neither reviewer found it saved much time, and neither got a perfect finish on dirty glass first time. Where it earns its keep is large glass that's hard or risky to reach.

The questions people ask about this one

Will it work on frameless glass?

Yes. It has edge sensors that notice air leaking in under the robot at a glass edge, according to the specifications, and TechRadar saw them work on indoor partitions with a 4cm gap. Keep the safety rope attached anyway, because the same reviewer saw it fall once from a framed window.

What happens if the power cuts out?

It stops cleaning and uses a backup battery to keep its suction for a while. the specifications claims up to 20 minutes of emergency hold, and Trusted Reviews saw it stop and warn when unplugged. Tie off the safety rope before use and take it down carefully after a warning, rather than counting on the full claimed hold time.

Does it leave streaks?

On lightly dirty glass, no: TechRadar got a smear-free finish indoors. On dirtier glass both TechRadar and Trusted Reviews saw streaks after one go. A dry pass before the wet one, plus a repeat run, fixed most of it. Think of it as a robot for upkeep.

Can I use it on upstairs outside windows?

Only if you can safely attach, tie off and retrieve it as HOBOT's instructions say. Trusted Reviews couldn't safely reach the outside of some top-hinged windows. TechRadar used reachable upper-floor glass behind railings, but wind blew the spray away. Check access first: the robot won't make an unsafe window safe to reach.

How long does one window take?

Longer than the box suggests. TechRadar measured about seven and a half minutes for a 1.3 square metre pane, against HOBOT's claim of 2.6 minutes per square metre in the specifications. Add time for moving it, refilling it and any second run on dirty glass.

Does it need a special cleaning fluid?

Trusted Reviews and TechRadar gave different advice on fluid. Use what HOBOT allows in the current S7 Pro manual, and ask the company if that's unclear. Neither review shows that deionised water or a household glass cleaner is a safe swap for the specified solution.

WINBOT W2S OMNI

Why consider it: Its station has a battery, so you don't need a socket by the window, and an owner found one pass enough on ordinary glass.

The compromise: You still wash the pad and move it between panes, and it won't take panes smaller than 30 by 40cm.

Why consider it: Root-Nation's tester got a clearer, drier finish thanks to its rear squeegee.

The compromise: A thin border round the frame still had to be wiped by hand.

Why consider it: Roboter-Forum found it cleaned everyday dirt well, and its station makes it easy to carry around.

The compromise: Corners, spray marks and moving between panes still needed attention.
