What we know

What we know about the HRM 1000 comes from Honda's own Honda store page and Honda range page, plus one owner. That buyer, reviewing it on Owner review on Lings, replaced an HRM 500 that had worked for 11 years. They found the new one familiar and mowing happily, but called the app and Bluetooth a little quirky. Honda's pages cover the slope rating, the short runs and the mulching cut.

Built for slopes

Honda claims the Miimo handles slopes up to 47% inside the lawn, per Honda. Its range page, Honda, credits strong grip and lift sensors that stop it getting stuck in holes. Along the wire, the limit drops to 17%. That's a steep rating for a mower this size, and it's the main reason to shortlist it. Treat the figure as a maximum.

Controlled from close by

You start, stop or send it home from its simple display, or use Honda's Mii-Monitor app over Bluetooth, per Honda. There's no internet connection, so you can't check on it while you're out. The one owner who wrote about it on Owner review on Lings found the app and Bluetooth a little quirky. Honda's Live models add the remote control, per Honda.

Short runs, quick charges

Honda quotes about 40 minutes of mowing and 40 minutes of charging from a small 1.9Ah battery, per Honda. On a lawn near the 1,000m² limit, that means lots of short trips rather than a few long ones. Honda also says it mulches clippings finely back into the lawn, and it has a PIN code, lift sensors and an alarm.

One owner, and what's open

The buyer on Owner review on Lings had run an older HRM 500 for 11 years without fail before choosing this model, and said the new one was very similar. That's encouraging, but it's one person's view, written soon after buying. Beyond that, the figures are Honda's. Still open: how good the cut and mulching really are, whether it manages anything near its slope rating on a real bank, and how this generation holds up over several seasons.

Our take

Should you buy the Miimo HRM 1000?

Best for: Sloping lawns where a dealer can install a boundary wire. Skip it if: You do not want to install a wire around the lawn.

consider it for a steep lawn if you are happy to lay a wire and mostly leave the mower alone. For a flatter lawn, the tested GARDENA smart SILENO life is the safer wired choice, and the Husqvarna Automower 305E NERA skips the wire.

The HRM 1000 is the smallest of Honda's current main Miimo range. It mows inside a boundary wire pegged round the lawn, and you control it from a simple display on the mower or from Honda's app over Bluetooth, which only works when you are nearby. Honda's headline claim is grip on slopes of up to 47% inside the lawn, well above GARDENA's wired models.

What is known comes from Honda's store and range pages plus a single owner review on Lings, and that buyer is happy. Honda quotes about forty minutes of mowing per charge, and passages between the wires need to be at least a metre wide. There's no internet connection, so you can't check on it while you're out.

The questions people ask about this one

Does it need a boundary wire?

Yes. It mows inside a wire pegged round the lawn, and Honda's store sells it with wire and pegs included, per Honda. Honda argues a wire works better than satellites near buildings and in deep shade, but laying it still takes an afternoon.

Will it cope with my slope?

Honda claims up to 47% inside the lawn and 17% along the wire, per Honda, which is steeper than the 35% GARDENA claims for its mowers. Nobody has tested that on the HRM 1000 yet, so if your lawn is near the limit, ask a dealer to check it on site.

Can it handle two lawns or a narrow passage?

Honda says it needs passages at least 1m wide, measured wire to wire, and that it copes with several mowing zones, per Honda. Honda's bigger models add a shortcut wire for narrow passages, per Honda, so look at those if your side return is tight.

What happens when it rains?

It's rated IPX4 and pauses during heavy rain to protect itself and the lawn, per Honda. That's a lower water rating than the IPX5 many rivals quote, so don't hose it down.

How noisy is it for neighbours?

Honda guarantees 58dB, per Honda, and says it's quiet enough to leave running in the background. The owner on Owner review on Lings didn't mention noise, and nobody has measured it independently.

smart SILENO life 1000

Why consider it: A wired mower for the same lawn size, and two testers found it gave a neat cut in a garden broken up by trees and paths.

The compromise: Its small wheels struggled with holes and bumps, and it's rated for only 10% slope along the wire.

Husqvarna Automower Aspire R4

Automower Aspire R4

£170 less than the Miimo HRM 1000

Why consider it: A small wired mower that a home tester found gave a superb cut and had a clever app.

The compromise: It's meant for lawns only up to 400m², and a lab test rated it borderline on uneven ground.

Husqvarna Automower 305E NERA

Automower 305E NERA

£595.17 more than the Miimo HRM 1000

Why consider it: No boundary wire, and one tester praised a superb striped finish, edges included.

The compromise: It needs open sky and Wi-Fi across the lawn, and a tester in a tree-lined garden struggled with reception.
