What we know

Honda's range page Honda and the Honda specification sheet describe remote control from anywhere, a geofence alarm, timers that adjust to the weather and teams of mowers sharing very large areas. It's rated for lawns up to 4,000m² and is the only Miimo with a wider cutting deck and heavy-duty rear wheels. The catch is the same as every Miimo: it mows inside a boundary wire, and on a lawn this size that's a lot of wire.

Wire first, satellites to help

Every Miimo follows a boundary wire. Honda says the Live models add a shortcut wire and satellite-assisted homing so the mower leaves fewer wheel tracks, plus free zones to keep it off areas like a new flower bed. Honda argues a wire keeps it working beside buildings, in deep shade and under cloud, where satellite-only mowers struggle.

Control from anywhere

Over mobile data, Honda says you can change schedules, set free zones and smart timers, update the software, track the mower on a map and get a geofence alert if it's moved, all from your phone or by asking Alexa. Honda adds timers that skip mowing in heavy rain or dry spells. Honda's pages don't say whether the mobile connection carries an ongoing fee.

Made for big, steep lawns

Honda lists a 25cm cut, 90 minutes' mowing per charge, an hour to recharge, heavy-duty rear wheels and a 47% slope rating inside the lawn, falling to 27% where the wire crosses a slope. Honda says teams of HRM 2500 and HRM 4000 mowers can share big areas such as sports pitches and parks.

Mixed messages on cutting height

Honda says the HRM 4000 Live adjusts its cutting height automatically, and the Honda product text mentions electric height adjustment. Yet the same store page's specification table lists manual adjustment from 20 to 60mm. Ask the dealer to show you before you buy, because automatic adjustment is one of the main reasons to choose this model over the HRM 2500 Live.

Still to be proven

No hands-on review has been published, so the details above are Honda's, from Honda and Honda. The open questions: how well it cuts, how often it needs rescuing, whether it really manages that 47% slope rating, whether the wire keeps it going in shade and beside buildings as Honda says, and how reliable the mobile tracking is over a season.

Our take

Should you buy the Miimo HRM 4000 Live?

Best for: Large lawns whose owners want dealer installation and support. Skip it if: You want a mower with independent tests of this exact version.

only for a very large, sloping lawn where a Honda dealer nearby can install and service it, and you are happy to buy on Honda's name. For big lawns with tests behind them, the Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD NERA and the Segway Navimow X420 are both wire-free.

The HRM 4000 Live is the biggest Miimo, rated for lawns up to 4,000m². It mows inside a boundary wire, with a shortcut wire for passages, and adds remote control from anywhere over mobile data, GPS tracking with a geofence alarm and satellite-assisted homing. It is the only Miimo with a wider cutting deck and heavy-duty rear wheels, and its body is sealed well enough to hose down.

Honda's pages disagree with each other on the cutting height: the product text promises electric adjustment while the spec table says manual. Ask a dealer to show you, because automatic height adjustment is one of the main reasons to pick it over the HRM 2500 Live. You'll also need to lay a wire round a very big lawn, and Honda doesn't say whether the mobile connection carries an ongoing fee.

The questions people ask about this one

Does it need a boundary wire?

Yes. Every Miimo mows inside a boundary wire, per Honda. The Live models add a shortcut wire and satellite-assisted homing to speed its trips back to the dock, but satellites don't replace the wire.

Will it cope with my slope?

Honda rates it for 47% inside the lawn and 27% where the wire crosses a slope, and fits heavy-duty rear wheels, per the specifications. No independent tester has checked either figure.

Is there a subscription for 4G or anti-theft?

It connects over mobile data for remote control, tracking and geofence alerts, per Honda. Honda's pages don't say whether that connection carries an ongoing fee, so ask the dealer before you buy.

What happens when it rains?

It's rated IPX5, so you can clean it with a hose, per the specifications. Honda says its smart timers skip mowing during heavy rain or dry spells to protect the lawn.

Can it handle two lawns or a narrow passage?

Honda says it handles passages at least 60cm wide wire-to-wire, several mowing zones and uneven ground, and can cross level patios and paths, per the specifications. If your lawns aren't connected, you'll have to lift it across.

Automower 435X AWD NERA

Why consider it: All-wheel drive for big, rough gardens up to 5,000m², and two long tests found a very even cut and dependable running.

The compromise: It runs over small objects and leaves a strip at the edges.

X4 series

Why consider it: Three tests found this big four-wheel-drive mower fast, sure-footed and kind to the turf on large, hilly lawns.

The compromise: It's heavy, too wide for narrow gaps, and edges are its weak spot.

LUBA 2 AWD

Why consider it: All-wheel drive and a 40cm cut for large, rough or sloping lawns, with dead-straight stripes.

The compromise: Setup had hiccups, and it needs open sky for its satellite aerial.
