The short version
The X4 is Sunseeker's first mower that finds its way with a spinning laser scanner on its roof instead of satellites. A camera helps it spot things in its path, so there's no wire to bury and no aerial to place, and it can map the lawn by itself. It sits beside the satellite-guided X Gen 2 models in Sunseeker's Elite range, and is rated for lawns of about 1,200m² and 45% slopes. At just over 12kg it's easy to carry.
The trade-off is a simpler machine than the price suggests. You set the cutting height with a dial on the mower, so every zone gets the same height, and the app has fewer settings than some rivals. Both testers found automatic mapping ran straight over steep drops, so gardens with raised lawns need mapping by hand. Edges still need a strimmer.
Our take: A good pick if you want the least fuss: no wire, no aerial, and a mower that simply gets on with it once mapped. Both testers found it dependable, quiet and tidy. If your lawn has sudden drops, plan to map it by hand. What reviewers found
Two home tests. T3 used it on a small sloping garden that sits above a patio, and Trusted Reviews tried it for several weeks on a large, rough lawn with trees, hidden slopes and rabbit holes. They agree on the big points: setup is easy, it never seemed lost, and it mows in tidy straight lines. Both saw automatic mapping drive over a drop and switched to mapping by hand, and both wished the cutting height could be set in the app.

Easy to set up, no aerial
Both testers found this the X4's best trait. Trusted Reviews plugged in the dock, charged it, pressed auto-map and watched it trundle off, using its built-in mobile connection before Wi-Fi was even set up. T3 had nothing to assemble beyond a brush that cleans the laser dome each time it docks, and was glad not to position a satellite aerial. T3 did hit Wi-Fi dropouts through thick stone walls until a mesh node was moved to a windowsill.
Map drops and banks by hand
Automatic mapping has a blind spot for drops. T3's lawn sits a few feet above the patio with no barrier, and the X4 drove straight over the edge while mapping. It didn't flip, but the boundary was then drawn by hand with plenty of clearance. Trusted Reviews saw it throw itself up and down near-45° banks either side of a flat patch, sending an error and needing to be picked up more than once, so it too mapped by driving the edge like a remote-control car.
Neat, straight lines once mapped
After mapping, both were impressed. Trusted Reviews got perfectly straight parallel lines for weeks without any satellite help, and tweaking the line spacing in the app got rid of wheel furrows. T3 found it never seemed lost, handled the garden's slope, and turned without marking the grass, and it coped with grass around two inches long. T3 noticed no drop in performance against satellite-guided mowers it had tested, and found setup simpler.
Avoids clutter, leaves the edges
T3 watched it slow near toys and a washing-line base, adjust its path and carry on without stopping abruptly. Trusted Reviews also found obstacle avoidance worked well. The edges are the weak spot: Trusted Reviews saw tufts left along fences even though it got close, and T3 says you'll still need an occasional strim. Sunseeker offers an Edge-Reach mode and a mode that drives over flush borders, per the specifications.
One height for the whole lawn
The cutting height is set with a dial on the mower, not in the app. Trusted Reviews found that surprising at the price, because it means one height everywhere, with no longer grass for wildflowers in one zone. T3 rarely changes height anyway and thinks the dial helps keep the cost down. Both found the app simple and clear but lighter on settings than rivals such as Mammotion's, which suits beginners better than tinkerers.

Does it need a boundary wire?
No wire and no aerial. It builds a 3D map with a spinning laser on its roof and uses a camera to spot obstacles, per the specifications. Trusted Reviews had it mapping by itself within minutes of unboxing, though both it and T3 ended up drawing part of the boundary by hand.
Does it need a clear view of the sky?
No. It doesn't rely on satellites, so trees and buildings shouldn't throw it off, per the specifications. Trusted Reviews's test lawn had mature trees and it still mowed straight lines for weeks. T3 found it needed decent Wi-Fi during mapping, though its 4G connection kept Trusted Reviews's mower online without Wi-Fi.
Will it cope with my slope?
Sunseeker rates it for 45%, or 24°, using its two rear wheels, per the specifications. T3 found it handled a sloping garden without issue, and Trusted Reviews ran it on rough ground with hidden slopes. The catch is automatic mapping near steep drops, which both testers had to redo by hand.
How close does it cut to the edge?
Not close enough to put the strimmer away. Trusted Reviews saw tufts left along fences, and T3 says occasional strimming is still needed. It has an Edge-Reach mode and can drive over flush borders to cut them, per the specifications.
How noisy is it for neighbours?
Very quiet, according to T3, which says you could run it at 8am on a Sunday without upsetting sensitive neighbours. Sunseeker lists low-noise running but no figure on the X4 page, per the specifications. It also has a night mode, T3 notes.
