What we know

Maytronics' listings in Europe (Maytronics (global)), the US (Maytronics (US)) and Australia (Maytronics (Australia)) describe a Liberty 300 with extras: an app, a choice of fine or ultra-fine filtering, Ultra Clean and Advanced Eco modes, and Click-Up to call it to the edge. They give a 2.5-hour default cycle but no battery runtime. One short owner reply on An owner on Reddit recommends a corded robot instead, blaming both cleaning and endurance.

What it adds over the Liberty 300

Maytronics (global) describes the Liberty 400 as a Liberty 300 with extras: the MyDolphin Plus app for settings and troubleshooting, a combined filter you can set up as fine plus ultra-fine or ultra-fine throughout, and an organiser for the charger and clicker. It also adds Ultra Clean mode, which moves more slowly with stronger suction, and Advanced Eco mode.

Eco mode and charging

Advanced Eco mode is meant to keep the floor clean all week on one charge, using short separate cycles, per Maytronics (global). The cycle selector lets you pick floor-only, floor and walls, or Ultra Clean, says Maytronics (Australia). You charge it by clicking a magnetic connector into place, so there's no dock. Maytronics lists a 2.5-hour default cycle but gives no battery runtime or charging time on these pages, so check the manual before you plan around it.

Getting it out of the pool

Shake the Click-Up clicker in the water and the robot climbs up to you, per Maytronics (Australia), or let it climb to the waterline by itself when a cycle ends. A pick-up hook for a pole comes in the box. It weighs 8.1kg dry, per Maytronics (global), which is lighter than the Liberty 600. Maytronics (Australia) also says it can clean sun ledges as shallow as 30cm.

One owner's warning, and open questions

The one owner comment we could use, on An owner on Reddit, is a short reply in a thread about this model advising a corded robot instead, because of both the cleaning and the endurance. It gives no pool size or other detail, so take it as a warning sign rather than a verdict. Beyond that, nobody independent has checked what buyers most want to know: real battery runtime, how it cleans steps, how often it needs help, whether Ultra Clean makes a visible difference and whether it really reaches 30cm sun ledges.

Our take

Should you buy the LIBERTY 400?

Best for: Pools whose owners want a cordless cleaner they can call to the edge. Skip it if: You want a stronger record in independent tests before buying.

Consider it if your pool is under ten metres, you want to lose the cable, and an app and a clicker to call it up appeal. Until it's tested, the Dolphin Liberty 600 is the safer cordless Dolphin, since two testers found it leaves floors very clean, and the Aiper Scuba V3 steers towards dirt and has three tests behind it.

The Liberty 400 sits between the Liberty 300 and the Liberty 600 in Dolphin's cordless range. Maytronics describes it as the 300 plus an app, a choice of fine or ultra-fine filtering and two extra modes, Ultra Clean for slower passes with stronger suction and Advanced Eco for short floor cleans through the week on one charge. It scrubs the floor, walls and waterline, charges through a magnetic connector and climbs up to be collected when you shake the Click-Up clicker in the water.

It is rated for pools up to ten metres, against fifteen for the Liberty 600, and Maytronics gives a default cycle of two and a half hours but no battery runtime. The only owner report we found was unhappy with both the cleaning and the runtime.

Before you buy

The questions people ask about this one

Does it climb walls and clean the waterline?

Maytronics lists floor, walls and waterline, with active waterline scrubbing, per the specifications. The cycle selector also offers floor-only cleaning, per Maytronics (Australia). We couldn't find an independent test of how well it scrubs the waterline yet.

Is it cordless, and how long does a charge last?

It's cordless and charges through a magnetic connector, per the specifications. Maytronics gives a 2.5-hour default cycle but no battery runtime on its product pages. An owner on An owner on Reddit complained about its endurance, without figures. Advanced Eco mode is meant to spread short floor cleans across a week on one charge.

How do I get it out of the water?

Shake the supplied Click-Up clicker in the water and it climbs the wall for pickup, per Maytronics (Australia). It can also climb to the waterline at the end of a cycle, and a pick-up hook for a pole is included. It weighs 8.1kg dry, per the specifications.

Will it work in an above-ground pool?

The maker isn't consistent. Its European listing says in-ground pools, per the specifications, while its US listing, per Maytronics (US), says in-ground and above-ground. It's lighter than the Liberty 600, but we couldn't find a test in an above-ground pool, so check with your dealer first.

Does it need an app?

The MyDolphin Plus app handles cleaning programmes, set-up and troubleshooting, per the specifications, and it's the main addition over the Liberty 300, which has none. Maytronics doesn't spell out which settings work without it, and none of the sources we use reports how well the app behaves with this model.

How do you clean the filter?

The filter lifts out of the top, per the specifications, so you don't turn the robot over. It's a combined filter you can set up as fine plus ultra-fine, or ultra-fine throughout for dusty pools, and an ultra-fine kit comes in the box.

LIBERTY 600

$300 more than the LIBERTY 400

Why consider it: Two testers found this cordless Dolphin leaves floors very clean, filters well and comes up when you shake the clicker.

The compromise: It wanders at random, and one tester found its step jet shifted only part of the dirt.

Aiper Scuba V3

Scuba V3

Why consider it: Its camera steers it towards debris instead of wandering, and three testers praised its pickup.

The compromise: Its runs are shorter, and it sinks again if you miss its 10-minute pickup window.

Why consider it: Testers found this cordless Dolphin cleans floors and the waterline well and never got stuck.

The compromise: It's heavy to lift out, and it gives steps only a quick pass.
