What reviewers found

Three home tests of the robot with its self-empty base. TechRadar used it as its only vacuum for a couple of weeks, Homes & Gardens ran it for weeks and checked back after a year, and Tech Advisor tested it in a home with pets. All three rate the vacuuming and the app, and all found the mop basic. They split on the detangling brush: Homes & Gardens was impressed, while TechRadar and Tech Advisor still had to pull long hair off it.

  • Hard floors

    Mixed results

TechRadar called the vacuuming seriously impressive, though its side brush flicked debris around, so it set two passes per room. Tech Advisor found it cleaned hard floors convincingly but not right into the edges.

  • Carpet and rugs

    Reviewers rate it highly

Homes & Gardens saw sugar and oats cleared from carpet quickly, though fine flour in deep pile took several passes. TechRadar found it climbed onto thick rugs without getting stuck, and Tech Advisor found it cleaned carpets convincingly.

  • Pet hair

    Mixed results

Homes & Gardens found the detangling brush cleared most scattered hair with only a few strands wrapped. Tech Advisor found it fine with pet hair but not long human hair, and TechRadar had it stop for help twice in a day over a clump of long hair.

  • Mopping

    Mixed results

It's a clip-on pad dragged behind the robot. TechRadar found it fine for light wipes but no use on spills or dried stains. Tech Advisor saw it lift dried toothpaste and tea marks, but it leaves a damp trail over rugs.

  • Navigation and obstacles

    Reviewers found problems

Tech Advisor saw it regularly charge into pet bowls, mats and cables, dragging mats behind it. TechRadar saw it fight a lamp cable and squash shoes, and once invent rooms on the map that took a factory reset to fix.

  • Dock and upkeep

    Not enough evidence

Only Tech Advisor judged the self-empty base, liking how small it is and expecting a bag to last about six weeks, but finding the emptying loud.

  • App and software

    Reviewers rate it highly

All three testers rated the app well, and Tech Advisor and Homes & Gardens had no complaints about it. The main glitch was TechRadar's map inventing rooms, which needed a factory reset.

  • Noise

    Mixed results

No tester found it quiet. TechRadar measured 65 to 69dB while vacuuming and Homes & Gardens a 74dBA peak, and Tech Advisor found the base loud for the few seconds it takes to empty.

  • Reliability and support

    Not enough evidence

Only Homes & Gardens followed up after a year of ownership, and eufy's own stores no longer sell it new, so spare parts may come from third parties.

  • Value

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use judged whether it's good value, and it's now mostly sold as remaining or refurbished stock.

Verdicts come from independent, hands-on, finished reviews. An area needs at least two of them before we say more than “Not enough evidence”. We don't score robots ourselves. How this works

Strong everyday vacuuming

TechRadar called its vacuuming seriously impressive, and it climbed from floorboards onto carpet and through thick rugs without getting stuck. Its side brush does flick debris around, so TechRadar set it to clean each room twice. Homes & Gardens watched it clear sugar and oats from carpet quickly, though fine flour in deep pile took several passes. Tech Advisor found it cleaned carpets and hard floors convincingly, just not right into the edges.

The detangling brush has limits

eufy sells the brush as detangling itself. Homes & Gardens scattered hair extensions and found it cleared most of the hair, with only a few strands wrapped. Tech Advisor found it fine with pet hair, but long human hair still wound round the brush and side brush. For TechRadar, a small clump of long hair made it stop and ask for help twice in one day. With long hair in the house, expect some brush clearing.

Watch out for low obstacles

Tech Advisor found it stopped short of most obstacles but regularly charged into pet bowls, mats and cables, dragging mats along behind it. TechRadar saw it fight a lamp cable and squash shoes, and it once invented rooms on the map, which took a factory reset to fix. Homes & Gardens found it bumped walls gently and took a few minutes to get over a ridge between rooms. Clear the floor before it runs.

The mop is an afterthought

You fill the tank and clip the pad on by hand, and it vacuums first, then drags the damp pad behind it. TechRadar found it fine for light, frequent wipes but no use on fresh spills or dried stains, and the pad cleans unevenly. Tech Advisor saw it lift dried toothpaste and tea marks, but warns it leaves a damp trail over rugs. Homes & Gardens was more positive about how clean its hard floors looked.

Compact base, shorter runs

Tech Advisor liked how small the base is, at 38 × 19 × 13cm, and expected a bag to last about six weeks, but found the few seconds of emptying loud. TechRadar got about half of eufy's claimed 180-minute runtime, with 30 minutes of cleaning taking the battery from 90% to 62%. It measured 65 to 69dB while vacuuming, and Homes & Gardens measured a 74dBA peak.

Covers the X8 Pro with its self-empty base, which is what all three reviewers tested. It was also sold without the base.

Our take

Should you buy the Clean X8 Pro Self-Empty?

Best for: Homes wanting regular vacuuming with a bin that empties itself. Skip it if: You want it to scrub floors or wash its own mop.

worth it at a clearance price if you mainly want dependable vacuuming, carpets included, and will mop by hand. The eufy Omni C20 washes its own mop pads and is much lower, and the Dreame D10 Plus Gen 2 is a current budget self-emptier.

The X8 Pro was eufy's pet-focused laser-mapping robot before the Omni models took over. Two small fans share the suction, and the roller brush spins backwards against a comb to shake hair loose. This version comes with a slim base that empties the bin into a bag. eufy's own stores no longer sell it new, so it's remaining or refurbished stock from other sellers.

The questions people ask about this one

Will it avoid cables and pet mess?

Not reliably. Tech Advisor saw it run into pet bowls, mats and cables, and TechRadar found it tangling with a lamp cable. It has a laser for mapping but no camera to recognise objects, per the specifications. Tidy up first and use no-go zones round pet areas.

Does it fit under low furniture?

Often not. TechRadar measured it at about 11.4cm including the laser tower on top, and eufy advises no-go zones under furniture lower than 12cm. If low sofas matter, the slimmer eufy C10 or Omni C20 are better choices.

Can it cross rugs and raised thresholds between rooms?

Well for vacuuming. TechRadar found it never failed to climb from floorboards onto carpet and didn't get stuck on thick rugs, and Tech Advisor saw it cross a 22mm threshold with some back-and-forth. The mop can't lift, so set no-mop zones over rugs.

How often do I have to empty or refill it?

The base empties the bin into a 2.5-litre bag that eufy says lasts up to 60 days without pets, 45 with one and 30 with two, per the specifications. Tech Advisor expected about six weeks. If you mop, you fill and empty the robot's water tank and wash the pad yourself each time.

How big is the dock, and is it loud?

Small. Tech Advisor measured the base at 38 × 19 × 13cm, much smaller than mop-washing docks, but found it loud for the few seconds it takes to empty. TechRadar suggests leaving about 50cm clear on each side so the robot can clean and dock.

eufy Omni C20
eufy · £499

Omni C20

Why consider it: Its dock empties the bin and washes and dries two spinning mop pads, and it's only 8.5cm tall.

The compromise: It can't see small obstacles either, and it covers less floor per charge than most robots.

Dreame D10 Plus Gen 2
Dreame

D10 Plus Gen 2

Why consider it: A current budget robot that maps quickly, cleans hard floors well and empties itself into a bag.

The compromise: It's weak on thick carpet and runs over cables and socks.

Tapo RV30 Max Plus
Tapo · £179.99

RV30 Max Plus

Why consider it: Fast laser mapping, methodical cleaning and a compact self-emptying dock, with a PCMag Editors' Choice.

The compromise: Its mop is also a light wipe, and fine grit and pet hair in carpet caught it out.

Shark AI Ultra Self-Empty
Shark

AI Ultra Self-Empty

Why consider it: A vacuum-only laser robot with a bagless self-emptying base, strong on hard floors.

The compromise: It bumps into small objects and struggles with hair pressed into carpet.
