What we know

There's one review per animal, and they aren't two views of the same thing. AOL gave a Companion Cat to Barb, an 88-year-old, for five months, and she adored it; her one complaint was the hard-to-reach switch. The Senior List lived with a Companion Pup for a month and scored it 2.5 out of 5, finding it cute but robotic, noisy and only half-responsive to his voice.

AOL, hands-on, 5 months at home, Sept 2025 (tested on the Companion Cat; Only one review per animal so far) · The Senior List, hands-on, 1 month, Jan 2026 (tested on the Companion Pup; Only one review per animal so far)

Cat adored, pup underwhelmed

With the cat, AOL's tester, Barb, sleeps with it every night and talks to it daily. It looked just like her last cat, and her daughter called it a slam dunk for loneliness. With the pup, The Senior List's reviewer, who grew up with dogs, was never fooled into thinking it was real and compared petting it to a good stuffed animal. Different animals, very different testers, so don't take one verdict as covering both.

Switches sit inside the belly

On the cat, AOL's biggest complaint was the switch. Barb has arthritis, and unlatching the cover to reach inside the cat's belly every night was hard, so some days she didn't turn it on at all. On the pup, The Senior List notes the switch is on its belly too, with a mute setting, though it doesn't say whether it was hard to reach. If you're buying for someone with stiff hands, plan to help with the switch.

The pup whirrs; the cat purrs

On the pup, The Senior List heard a slight mechanical noise every time it moved, and found its bark tinny. Its bark-back feature responded to his voice only about half the time, though touch worked more reliably. On the cat, AOL reports that Barb loved the purring during the day but had it switched off at night so it wouldn't disturb her sleep. It doesn't say anything either way about motor noise.

Soft and simple to start

AOL found the cat much lighter than a real cat, and so soft that Barb asked whether it was real fur. The Senior List liked the pup's smooth coat and that the batteries come in the box, so there's nothing to set up. The pup doesn't walk, and its reviewer missed that in a dog, though he guessed people would mind that less in a cat that just sits on the lap. That's his opinion, not something he tested.

There's one review per animal: AOL tested the Companion Cat and The Senior List tested the Companion Pup. We keep their findings separate, and neither counts as a review of the other animal.

Our take

Should you buy the Companion Cat / Pup?

Best for: Older people who miss having a pet and cannot care for a real one. Skip it if: You want a robot that holds a conversation.

buy the cat for an older relative who misses a pet and can't look after a real one, and plan to switch it on and off for them if their hands are weak. Casio's Moflin reacts more subtly, and PARO has the stronger research record in care homes.

Joy for All pets are life-sized cuddly animals with motors and sensors inside, made by Ageless Innovation, a company that began inside Hasbro. The cat purrs with a vibration you can feel, meows and rolls over for a tummy rub. The pup barks back when you talk to it, wags and has a heartbeat you can feel. There's no app, no Wi-Fi and nothing to set up, just four C batteries.

Each animal has a single review, so they can't be read as two views of the same thing. AOL gave a Companion Cat to Barb, an 88-year-old, for five months, and she adored it. The Senior List tested the pup. The rest comes from the maker. The animals don't walk, learn or remember anyone, the movements come with audible whirring, and the on-off switch sits inside the belly, which can defeat stiff fingers. The pup was out of stock on the maker's US store when checked.

The questions people ask about this one

Does it need a subscription to keep working?

No. According to the specifications, it runs on four C batteries, which come in the box, and there's no app or account involved. The only running cost is replacement batteries. The Senior List didn't need to change the pup's batteries during a month of testing.

What does it record, and where does that go?

Nothing, going by the maker's details. The pets respond to touch, motion and sound, but the maker lists no camera, app or internet connection the specifications. That makes them some of the simplest companion robots to give someone wary of technology, and AOL's 88-year-old tester sleeps with hers and talks to it daily.

Is it suitable for someone with dementia?

It's designed for older adults, and the maker pitches it at people with Alzheimer's and other dementias the specifications. AOL's 88-year-old tester fell in love with her cat. The Senior List notes the pets aren't medical devices, though some memory-care settings use them. If you're unsure how the person will react, ask a care professional.

How long do the batteries last?

The maker doesn't say. On the pup, The Senior List didn't have to replace the batteries in a month of testing, and suggests keeping spare C batteries handy because lots of play drains them faster. On the cat, AOL only notes that the batteries will need replacing at some point.

Should I get the cat or the pup?

According to the specifications, the cat purrs, meows and rolls over, while the pup barks back, wags and has a heartbeat. AOL's tester loved the cat as a lap companion. The Senior List found the pup's lack of movement a letdown in a dog. Nobody has tested both, so these are two separate experiences, not a comparison.

PARO

Why consider it: The therapy seal with the strongest research behind it, including a large trial showing more engagement than a plush toy.

The compromise: It's sold through regional distributors, not consumer shops, and the trial benefits weren't consistent across every measure.

Casio Moflin

Moflin

Why consider it: A small furry companion that responds to touch with subtle movements and sounds.

The compromise: It has to recharge on its bed, and it's pocket-sized rather than lap-sized.

Why consider it: A more lifelike robotic puppy that impressed a reviewer with its head movements and responses to petting.

The compromise: It's still on a waitlist, and nobody has reported on living with one at home.
