What we know
TechCrunch published one early review. Engadget covered the launch rather than testing it properly, and The droid you are looking for describes repairs to an early unit, which shows how repairs went for him but not how reliable today's units are. Nobody has yet tried the current chat features or bundles, and KEYi's own claims are labelled as such. Before you buy, check the bundle includes the charging dock, and find out who handles repairs locally and what the connected-service terms are.
TechCrunch, hands-on, Jan 2023 (Early crowdfunding unit)
Built to roam, not sit still
KEYi says Loona uses a depth sensor, a colour camera and motion sensors to plan its route, keeps a safe distance from people and obstacles, and turns towards sounds KEYi Tech. At its 2023 launch, Engadget placed it halfway between Anki's Cozmo and Amazon's Astro, with a 3D camera and edge sensors for getting around the home. Give it an open, tidy floor and keep it well away from stairs.
Ears and hips have needed repairs
The droid you are looking for, who backed Loona's crowdfunding campaign, describes an "ear motor disaster": KEYi sent him parts and he fitted new ear motors himself because there were no local repair centres then. Later he says KEYi offered repairs for hip bearings that break too often, and by then his ears had broken again. That's one owner's unit from an early batch, not a fault rate. It's still reason enough to find out how repairs work before you buy.
Repairs can be slow to arrange
When The droid you are looking for sent Loona off for repair in 2024, KEYi quoted three to five days, and the work went to a repair partner in Poland. He couldn't download the returns label, the partner's emails didn't arrive and two separate courier collections were booked for one robot. KEYi lists a one-year warranty KEYi Tech. Buy from a seller whose returns process you trust, and keep the box in case it has to go back.
ChatGPT chat and a camera
KEYi says Loona uses ChatGPT to hold conversations, describe objects you show it, turn your ideas into pictures and remember the family over time KEYi Tech. It also lists remote viewing through the app, and says as much processing as possible happens on the robot itself. The product page doesn't say which requests go to the cloud.
Check which edition you're buying
KEYi currently sells Loona Premium with a charging dock and game props, and a Space Edition limited to 3,000 numbered units, with dispatch from 17 October 2026 KEYi Tech. The owner reports from The droid you are looking for cover an early crowdfunded unit, not these bundles. KEYi's product page doesn't say whether the ear and hip parts have changed since. Make sure the dock is in your bundle, because Loona needs it to recharge on its own.
KEYi's claims and early owners' experiences are kept separate below.
Our take
Should you buy the Loona?
Best for: People wanting a playful robot pet with room to roam. Skip it if: You cannot give it clear floor space to move around.
Loona may appeal if you want a mobile robot character and can provide clear floor space, but confirm current features, repair arrangements and bundle contents before choosing. EMO stays on a desk and has patchy owner-reported voice recognition. EBO X has household camera testing, but also rug, threshold and app problems.
Loona is KEYi Tech's robot pet, about 21cm long. It rolls on two wheels, wiggles motorised ears and shows its moods on a screen face. A camera and depth sensor help it find its way and recognise the family, four microphones let it turn towards your voice, and it heads back to its dock when the battery runs low. KEYi says it chats and makes up stories using ChatGPT, and there are games, simple coding for children and remote viewing through the app.
The trade-off is upkeep. KEYi claims about two hours of play per charge. An early owner's account describes ear motors, hip bearings and a difficult European repair process, but one account can't tell you how often current units go wrong. KEYi's 2026 buying guide says no mandatory monthly subscription is currently required for the core experience.
Before you buy
The questions people ask about this one
Does it need a subscription to keep working?
KEYi's 2026 buying guide says there's currently no mandatory monthly subscription for the core experience KEYi Tech. That's what the maker says today, not a lifetime promise for every future AI service. Check the terms for the bundle you choose, since the chat features only work while the service keeps running.
What does it record, and where does that go?
Loona has a 720p camera, a depth sensor and four microphones the specifications. KEYi offers remote viewing through its app and says it processes as much data as possible on the robot itself KEYi Tech. The product page doesn't say what gets sent to the cloud for ChatGPT conversations.
How long does the battery last?
KEYi claims about two hours of continuous play, and says Loona drives back to its dock to recharge the specifications. None of the sources here have timed a current unit, so the two-hour figure is KEYi's alone. The dock comes in the Premium and Space Edition bundles; without it you'd charge through the USB-C port instead.
What happens if it breaks?
KEYi lists a one-year warranty KEYi Tech. The droid you are looking for had ear motors fail on an early unit and fitted replacements himself, then had a frustrating time sending it to KEYi's European repair partner. Before you buy, find out who handles repairs, shipping and warranty claims in your country.
Is it OK for young children?
KEYi pitches Loona at families, with games and simple block-based coding for children KEYi Tech. It doesn't give an age rating. It weighs about 1.1kg and has moving ears and joints, and The droid you are looking for's ears and hip bearings needed repair, so supervise younger children rather than letting them carry it about.
Alternatives
Other companion robots to compare.

EMO
Why consider it: A smaller robot character that lives on your desk, with a huge range of animations.
The compromise: Owners report patchy voice recognition, and it hasn't had a finished independent review either.

EBO X
Why consider it: A rolling home camera robot with a sharp 4K camera and Alexa built in, if checking on home matters most.
The compromise: Reviewers found it gets stuck on rugs and thresholds, and the app can be hard work.

Vector 2.0
Why consider it: An expressive desk robot that recognises faces and plays with its cube.
The compromise: Voice commands need a paid subscription.
