What reviewers found

Four tests: Tech Advisor lived with it for a month, Trusted Reviews ran it in its lab home, TechRadar tested the US version at home, and Vacuum Wars measured it against the ThermaCharged model. All praise how little upkeep the dock needs, and most found the vacuuming strong. Most complain about a basic app with no manual suction or water settings, wet floors and patchy edges, though TechRadar liked the app. They disagree on thresholds and avoidance.

  • Hard floors

    Mixed results

Open floors come up well: Vacuum Wars rated debris pickup excellent and Trusted Reviews cleared all its flour. Edges are weaker, with Trusted Reviews seeing dust left along the plinth and Tech Advisor finding specks in kitchen corners.

  • Carpet and rugs

    Mixed results

Vacuum Wars rated its carpet deep-cleaning among the best it has measured, and Tech Advisor found it as good on carpet as on hardwood. Trusted Reviews needed two runs to clear flour, and TechRadar saw some left on a thick rug.

  • Pet hair

    Not enough evidence

Only Vacuum Wars measured pet-hair pickup, finding it above average.

  • Mopping

    Mixed results

It lifts stains, but leaves floors wet. Tech Advisor and Trusted Reviews saw coffee, wine and mud removed, yet TechRadar and Trusted Reviews found floors left quite wet with no way to turn the water down, a worry for old wood.

  • Navigation and obstacles

    Mixed results

TechRadar called its first map the most accurate it had seen and never saw it hit furniture. Vacuum Wars rated its avoidance below average and found it wouldn't attempt a 25mm threshold, though other testers saw it climb high ones.

  • Dock and upkeep

    Reviewers rate it highly

The main reason to buy it. After a month Tech Advisor found the pad still looked new and the base smelled fresh, and TechRadar said it lived up to the NeverTouch name, needing only a monthly wipe of sensors and brushes.

  • App and software

    Mixed results

Mostly criticised. Trusted Reviews and Tech Advisor found it basic, with fiddly spot cleaning and no suction or water settings, and Vacuum Wars missed multi-floor maps. TechRadar liked its simplicity.

  • Noise

    Not enough evidence

The reviews we use haven't said enough yet about how loud the robot or its base is.

  • Reliability and support

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use ran it long-term or judged Shark's support yet.

  • Value

    Not enough evidence

Only Tech Advisor judged value, finding it pricey but good value against rivals with similar features, especially on offer.

Verdicts come from independent, hands-on, finished reviews. An area needs at least two of them before we say more than “Not enough evidence”. We don't score robots ourselves. How this works

A dock that really cuts chores

After 30 days, Tech Advisor found the pad still looked new and the anti-odour cartridge kept the base smelling fresh. TechRadar said the base lived up to the NeverTouch name, though sensors, contacts and brushes still want a wipe about monthly. Trusted Reviews points out that bagless means rinsing two washable filters in the base. For most people this is the reason to buy it: weeks between chores, and no dust bags to reorder.

Strong vacuuming, fine dust aside

Vacuum Wars found debris pickup excellent on both floor types and measured about 90% of embedded sand removed from carpet, with above-average pet-hair pickup. Trusted Reviews needed two runs to clear flour from carpet but got all of it off hard floor, and Tech Advisor found it worked as well on carpet as on hardwood. TechRadar saw a light dusting of flour left on hard floor and a thick rug, so it suggests vacuuming and mopping together.

Wet floors after mopping

The mopping itself works: Trusted Reviews saw red wine, ketchup and dried mud removed, and Tech Advisor watched gravy, coffee and mud stains vanish every time. Water is the problem. TechRadar found its historic wood floors left wetter than it wanted, and Trusted Reviews also found the floor quite wet, with no way to reduce the flow in either test. Vacuum Wars rated its water use acceptable. If you have old wood floors, bear that in mind.

Corners and edges need finishing

Shark's air blasts and extending pad are meant to clean right to the edge. Tech Advisor still found specks left in kitchen corners and a mop that didn't reach them. Trusted Reviews saw a thin line of dust left along the plinth. TechRadar thinks its cautious obstacle avoidance kept it too far from walls for the air blasts to work well. Expect to sweep the odd corner by hand.

A very basic app

Trusted Reviews found the spot-clean box can't be resized, there's one schedule per day and no suction, water or pass settings; Tech Advisor also found spot cleaning fiddly. Vacuum Wars calls Shark's app the weakest in the industry, with no multi-floor maps and no live map. TechRadar liked its simplicity and called the first map the most accurate it had seen. If you want control, this will frustrate you.

Thresholds and obstacles: mixed verdicts

TechRadar saw it lift itself over every threshold in its house except one about 5cm tall, and Trusted Reviews found it cleared its high test threshold easily. Vacuum Wars found it wouldn't even attempt a 25mm threshold. On obstacles, TechRadar never saw it hit furniture, but Vacuum Wars rated avoidance below average, and Trusted Reviews notes it has no camera to recognise pet mess. The different homes and test set-ups may explain some of this.

Tech Advisor and Trusted Reviews tested the UK model (RV2800ZEUK); TechRadar and Vacuum Wars tested the US version.

Our take

Should you buy the PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro 2-in-1?

Best for: Homes with carpet and hard floors on a single level. Skip it if: Your wooden floors need very little water when mopped.

Consider it for one level if you prefer a bagless dock and your floors tolerate its water output. Its limited app and conflicting climbing results matter if you need precise settings or have raised thresholds. The X11 OmniCyclone offers another bagless dock, but its own navigation limits make it no assurance around pet accidents.

The PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro is Shark's most hands-off robot, with a dock that looks after the mop pad as well as the dust. The robot senses dirt, floor type and stains and adjusts itself, blows air to push debris out of corners, and lifts its whole body to get over obstacles and keep its mop pad off rugs. The base is bagless, and Shark says it holds sixty days of debris and thirty days of water. A cheaper NeverTouch version has the same robot with a dock that doesn't clean the pad.

The dock is the reason to buy it. After a month Tech Advisor found the pad still looked new and the base smelled fresh, and TechRadar said it lived up to the NeverTouch name. Vacuum Wars rated debris pickup excellent and its carpet deep-cleaning among the best it has measured, though Trusted Reviews needed two runs to clear flour from carpet. Mopping lifts stains, with Tech Advisor watching gravy, coffee and mud vanish, but TechRadar and Trusted Reviews both found floors left quite wet with no way to turn the water down, a worry for old wood. Edges were patchy, with Trusted Reviews seeing dust left along the plinth. Most complain about the app. Trusted Reviews found no suction, water or pass settings, and Vacuum Wars calls Shark's app the weakest in the industry, though TechRadar liked its simplicity. Vacuum Wars found it wouldn't attempt a 25mm threshold, while TechRadar saw it lift itself over nearly every threshold in its house.

The questions people ask about this one

Will it avoid cables and pet mess?

Don't count on it for pet mess. Trusted Reviews notes its front sensor isn't a camera and can't recognise things like pet waste, and Vacuum Wars rated its avoidance below average, though TechRadar never saw it bump furniture.

Can it cross rugs and raised thresholds between rooms?

Its lifting body helped TechRadar and Trusted Reviews cross thresholds, but Vacuum Wars found it wouldn't attempt a 25mm rise. With results that far apart, there's no reliable maximum to quote, so measure the height and shape of yours.

Can it leave the mops in the dock for carpet?

Yes. Trusted Reviews found it drops the mop bracket at the dock for vacuum-only runs, so it can tackle deep carpet without wetting it. When mopping, it lifts its rear to keep the pad off rugs.

How often do I have to empty or refill anything?

Shark claims up to 60 days of dust and 30 days of water capacity, per the specifications, but use and dirt levels change those intervals. TechRadar still recommends sensor and brush cleaning, and Trusted Reviews notes two washable base filters. Check those parts and the tanks regularly.

Can I set suction and water levels myself?

No. Trusted Reviews and TechRadar both found no manual control over suction or water; the robot decides using its dirt and floor sensors. That's easy for beginners, but you can't turn the water down for delicate wood floors.

Does it map more than one floor?

No. Vacuum Wars found the app lacks multi-level mapping and a live map of where the robot has been. If you want to carry it upstairs and clean a second floor properly, look at a Roborock or eufy instead.

Shark PowerDetect UV Reveal 2-in-1
Shark · £1,039.99

PowerDetect UV Reveal 2-in-1

Why consider it: Shark's top model is excellent on hard floors, and its UV light finds sticky spots for the mop to go back to.

The compromise: It's also heavy on water, and the app is just as basic.

ECOVACS DEEBOT X11 OmniCyclone
ECOVACS · £699

DEEBOT X11 OmniCyclone

Why consider it: Another bagless dock, with a self-rinsing roller mop; hard floors and hair went well in testing.

The compromise: Emptying its bin and its early navigation were messier than testers wanted.

Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai
Dyson · £779

Spot+Scrub Ai

Why consider it: A bagless emptying dock too, good on hard floors and at dodging objects.

The compromise: It's weaker on carpet and, at 11cm, too tall for low furniture.

PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro 2-in-1 head to head

Head to head

Shark ThermaCharged PowerDetect vs PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro 2-in-1

Our verdict: Vacuum Wars tested both and preferred this one: it cleaned slightly better and used about half the water. The ThermaCharged adds a hot-water mop wash and heated drying, and it dodged more obstacles, so choose it only if clutter worries you more than streaky floors.
