RV30 Max Plus
A low-cost Tapo robot vacuum with laser mapping, a clip-on mop and a compact dock that empties the bin. It maps fast and cleans methodically, but fine grit and sticky spills beat it.

The short version
The RV30 Max Plus is one of Tapo's budget robots. The Plus means it comes with a dock that empties the robot's bin into a bag, while the RV30 Max is the same robot with a plain charger. Next to it sits the RV20 Max Plus, which moves the laser into the robot's front so it's lower, but otherwise shares the same features. Above both is the RV50 Pro Omni, with a dock that also washes the mops.
The trade-off is the mop and the suction. The mop is a flat cloth on a plate that you fit and wash by hand, and it can't lift over carpet, so you tell the robot to avoid rugs when mopping. Tests found it strong on bigger debris but weak on fine sand, especially in carpet.
Our take: A sensible buy for a small or medium home that mostly needs regular vacuuming, with a dock that saves you emptying the bin. If you have lots of low furniture, the RV20 Max Plus is lower. If you want mopping that looks after itself, save up for the Tapo RV50 Pro Omni, whose dock washes the mops.

What reviewers found
Two home tests. PCMag ran it in a two-bedroom apartment with measured debris tests and gave it an Editors' Choice for budget robots. Tom's Guide tested it on cereal, kitty litter and pet hair. Both liked the fast mapping, the easy app and the compact dock. Both found big debris easy and finer or deeper dirt harder: sand for PCMag, pet hair on carpet for Tom's Guide. Both rate the mop as a light wipe.

Fast mapping, methodical cleaning
PCMag timed its first mapping run at about eight minutes for a 1,500-square-foot apartment, and found the map surprisingly accurate. It then cleaned in neat rows and finished a whole-home run in about 68 minutes, faster than rivals it compared. It got stuck once per early run at one pantry corner until a no-go zone fixed it. Tom's Guide also found mapping quick and quiet.
Great on crumbs, weak on grit
PCMag measured 100% rice pickup on carpet and about 96% on hardwood, but only about 27% of sand from carpet and 54% from hardwood. Tom's Guide found the same pattern: cereal and kitty litter were easy, but it struggled with pet hair on carpet. Expect tidy floors after everyday crumbs and fluff, but not a deep clean of rugs.
The mop is a light wipe
PCMag spread jelly on the kitchen floor; the robot smeared it on the first pass, cleaned up most on the second, and left sticky residue. Tom's Guide found it fine for light marks but likely to leave residue on sticky spills. The pad can't lift, so PCMag set it to avoid carpet while mopping, an option Tom's Guide also describes. You wash the cloth yourself.
Easy app, clumsy voice control
Both PCMag and Tom's Guide found the Tapo app well laid out, with room editing, no-go zones and up to three passes. You have to mark carpets on the map yourself, as Tom's Guide notes, because the robot doesn't detect them. PCMag found Alexa control awkward: it only responded to turning the robot on or off, not to cleaning commands.
A compact emptying dock
PCMag measured the dock at 13 by 9 by 6.5 inches, smaller than most self-emptying docks, and found it emptied the bin thoroughly. Tom's Guide was also glad of a dock that doesn't dominate the room. It has no water tanks, so mopping means filling the robot's own tank by hand. PCMag measured 98 minutes of battery life.

Will it avoid cables and pet mess?
Don't count on it. Tapo lists laser-based obstacle avoidance, per the specifications, but neither PCMag nor Tom's Guide tested cables or pet mess. PCMag's robot did get stuck at one corner until it was blocked off.
Does it fit under low furniture?
It's 10cm tall including the laser turret, per the specifications. PCMag points out the RV20 Max Plus is lower because its laser sits in the front, so choose that one for low sofas.
Can it leave the mops in the dock for carpet?
No. The mop plate clips under the robot and can't lift, so PCMag set it to avoid carpet when mopping, as Tom's Guide also suggests. You add carpets to the map yourself, and take the plate off for vacuum-only runs.
How often do I have to empty or refill anything?
Tapo claims the dock's 3-litre bag lasts up to two months, per the specifications. The robot's 300ml water tank needs filling by hand for mopping, and Tom's Guide recommends washing the mop cloth every week or two so it doesn't start to smell.
Does it need a subscription or an account?
You need a Tapo account in the app to set it up, PCMag found, and it works with Alexa and Google Assistant. Neither review mentions a subscription. It only connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, per the specifications.
