What reviewers found

There are two long home tests, both in Sweden. PC-WELT ran it for four weeks on a steep 3,000m² plot and gave it 3.5 out of 5. Teknikveckan left it mowing a flat, uneven 2,000m² plot for about two months and gave it 7 out of 10. Both found a very even cut, dependable running, weak detection of small objects and edges that need trimming. They split on the app. An owner on Owner on Reddit adds a narrower report about errors in extreme heat. None of the reviews we use checked the 70% slope claim.

PC-WELT, hands-on, 4 weeks, Jun 2025 · Teknikveckan, hands-on, About two months, Jul 2025

  • Cut quality and edges

    Mixed results

Across the lawn the cut is very even: PC-WELT called it golf-course quality and Teknikveckan found the grass neatly cut throughout. The edges let it down, as the single disc stops short of the border and both had to trim by hand.

  • Setup and boundaries

    Reviewers rate it highly

Both ran it wire-free without trouble, though neither set it up alone: a dealer configured PC-WELT's to use its mobile connection instead of a reference station, and a Husqvarna technician mapped Teknikveckan's plot.

  • Navigation

    Reviewers rate it highly

PC-WELT got it stuck once in four weeks across several zones on a 3,000m² plot, and blamed an unmarked spot. Teknikveckan had it tangle in a bush once, then run for about two months without a stop.

  • Slopes and rough ground

    Reviewers rate it highly

The four-wheel drive had no trouble with the steepest parts of the hilly PC-WELT plot, and on the flat but bumpy lawn at Teknikveckan the jointed body coped far better than an ordinary mower. None of the reviews we use checked the maker's slope claim.

  • Obstacles and safety

    Reviewers found problems

It uses ultrasonic sensors, not a camera, and small things get run over. PC-WELT saw it miss a water bottle or tennis ball, and Teknikveckan saw it struggle with a tennis ball and plastic spade and push a cool box along.

  • Weather

    Not enough evidence

Only Teknikveckan saw it in the rain: it headed back to the dock when rain started and carried on by itself afterwards. No other review we use tested wet weather.

  • App and software

    Mixed results

Both liked editing the map over a satellite photo without walking the mower there. Beyond that they split: PC-WELT found the app elegant and easy, while Teknikveckan found it messy, with settings hard to find.

  • Upkeep

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use has reported on cleaning or blade changes yet.

  • Reliability and support

    Not enough evidence

Both testers found it dependable over four weeks to two months, but none of the reviews we use has run it long-term or judged Husqvarna's support.

  • Value

    Reviewers found problems

Both testers found the price hard to justify for a private garden. PC-WELT says rivals now offer roughly equivalent mowers for a fraction of the cost, and Teknikveckan reached a similar view.

Verdicts come from independent, hands-on, finished reviews. An area needs at least two of them before we say more than “Not enough evidence”. We don't score robots ourselves. How this works

Grip and reliability on awkward ground

The PC-WELT plot has steep slopes, several zones and assorted obstacles, and the four-wheel drive had no trouble with the hardest spots. In four weeks it got stuck once, and the reviewer blamed themselves for not marking that spot. The plot at Teknikveckan is flat, so no slopes were tested, but on its bumpy patches the jointed body turned far more strongly than an ordinary mower. It mowed five days a week for about two months, got tangled in a bush once, and ran without a stop after that zone was fixed.

Even cut, but trim the edges

PC-WELT called the result golf-course quality once random mowing had covered the whole plot, which took three to four days. Teknikveckan also found the lawn evenly and neatly cut throughout its test. Both say the edges are the weak spot. The single 22cm disc doesn't reach the border, so PC-WELT expects a few centimetres more hand trimming than on Husqvarna models with an edge-cutting disc, and Teknikveckan had to strim along the fence and round some trees and bushes.

Small objects get run over

There's no front camera, just ultrasonic sensors, per the specifications. PC-WELT found it steered round larger things such as a bucket, but a water bottle or tennis ball could be run over. Teknikveckan saw the same pattern. A football was fine, but a tennis ball or plastic spade less so, and it drove straight into a cool box and pushed it along for a while. If children leave toys out, or a dog drops balls on the lawn, sweep the grass before it starts.

Wire-free setup, with a dealer's help

Both testers had professional help. A Husqvarna technician mapped the Teknikveckan plot, and at PC-WELT a dealer set it up to run on its mobile connection rather than a reference station, which worked very well. Both liked editing the map over a satellite photo without walking the mower to the spot. The rest of the app divided them: PC-WELT found it elegant and easy, while Teknikveckan found it messy, with settings hard to find. Husqvarna says the reference station is only needed where mobile coverage is lacking, per the specifications.

Heatwave errors, fixed by schedule

An owner on Owner on Reddit in northern Portugal got errors soon after installation, during unusually hot weather. They say the service technician checked with Husqvarna and suggested mowing from evening to morning, after which the errors stopped. One owner's report doesn't prove a temperature limit or a fault on every machine. If you live somewhere hot, ask your dealer about summer scheduling before you set it running in the afternoon.

Our take

Should you buy the Automower 435X AWD NERA?

Best for: Large lawns with slopes or rough ground. Skip it if: You do not have a local dealer to install and maintain it.

buy it for a large, steep or broken-up lawn that defeats ordinary mowers, if having a Husqvarna dealer matters to you. If your garden is gentler, the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD is the one to compare.

The 435X AWD NERA is the wire-free version of Husqvarna's four-wheel-drive Automower, rated for lawns up to 5,000m². The body bends in the middle and drives all four wheels, which is how Husqvarna can claim slopes of up to seventy per cent inside the lawn. It steers by satellite with corrections over its own mobile connection, so there is no wire and usually no reference station. It finds obstacles with ultrasonic sensors, not a camera, and its single cutting disc stops short of the border.

Both tests ran for weeks in Sweden and both found it dependable. PC-WELT used it for four weeks on a steep, hilly plot and called the cut golf-course quality, with the four-wheel drive untroubled by the hardest spots and only one stuck in the whole test. Teknikveckan left it mowing a flat, bumpy lawn for about two months, found the grass neatly cut throughout and, after one tangle in a bush, saw it run without a stop. Small objects are the weakness. PC-WELT saw it miss a water bottle or tennis ball, and Teknikveckan watched it push a cool box along. Both had to trim the edges by hand. They split on the app, which PC-WELT found elegant and Teknikveckan found messy. Both said the price is hard to justify for a private garden, and PC-WELT says rivals now offer much the same for a fraction of the cost.

The questions people ask about this one

Does it need a boundary wire?

No. It can use virtual boundaries or a physical wire, per the specifications. PC-WELT ran it wire-free on its built-in mobile connection, on a dealer's advice, with no reference station, and Teknikveckan also ran it wire-free after a Husqvarna technician mapped the plot.

Will it cope with my slope?

Husqvarna claims 70% inside the lawn and 50% at the boundary, per the specifications. PC-WELT found it had no problem with the steepest parts of its test plot, but gave no measured angle, and the Teknikveckan plot was flat. Treat the 70% figure as a claim until someone tests it.

How close does it cut to the edge?

Not very. PC-WELT found the single 22cm disc stops short of the border, leaving a few centimetres more to trim by hand than Husqvarna models with an edge-cutting disc. Teknikveckan had to strim along its fence and round trees and bushes.

What happens when it rains?

The mower is rated IPX4, per the specifications. When rain started mid-mow, Teknikveckan got a notification that it was heading back to the dock, and it carried on by itself once the rain stopped.

Do I have to pay a subscription for 4G or anti-theft?

It has a built-in mobile connection, GPS theft tracking and a GeoFence alarm, per the specifications. PC-WELT controlled it over Bluetooth or through the SIM card inside. Husqvarna's page doesn't mention a fee for the connection, so confirm with your dealer what's included and for how long.

Will it cope with a heatwave?

One owner on Owner on Reddit in Portugal got repeated errors in extreme heat until a technician suggested mowing overnight instead. It's a single report, not a known fault, but in a hot climate it's worth planning cooler mowing hours from the start.
