Start with the pool, not the robot
Record pool dimensions, maximum depth, liner or surface material, steps, ledges and the shape of the floor. Confirm those features against the exact model’s manual. A cleaner advertised for a large pool may still be unsuitable for a particular liner, shallow shelf or tight corner.
Above-ground compatibility should be explicit. Do not assume a wall-climbing cleaner can safely work on every flexible-sided pool. Ask the manufacturer about unusual constructions before purchase and keep its answer with the order details.
Match filtration to the debris
Leaves need basket capacity and an intake that resists blocking. Fine dust needs suitable filtration, and the smallest quoted particle size is useful only when the filter specification is clearly sourced. Check whether a finer insert is included or sold separately.
Read reports about coverage consistency, not just the appearance of one clean patch. Stairs, benches and corners may still need a brush. A pool robot removes physical debris; it does not replace the pool’s normal circulation, water testing or chemical treatment.
Cordless convenience has a trade-off
Cordless models remove a trailing power cable but add charging, battery ageing and retrieval planning. Compare the complete cycle plus recharge time with how often the pool needs cleaning. A maximum runtime claim alone cannot establish full coverage.
Corded models can suit frequent cleaning if cable handling and a suitable power arrangement are manageable. Follow the manual for electrical placement, use and swimmer restrictions. In both designs, check wet lifting weight, drainage and the accessibility of the basket before buying.
Keep maintenance realistic
Choose a model you can retrieve safely from your actual pool edge. Check whether a hook, app-controlled parking or another retrieval method is needed and whether accessories are included. A heavy cleaner can be awkward even when its cleaning performance is strong.
Rinse filters as directed, inspect tracks and brushes, and verify local replacement-basket and battery support. Follow water-temperature and storage requirements. The cheapest purchase can become expensive if a proprietary filter or sealed battery is unavailable in your market.
Pool robots for leaves, fine dirt and walls
Leaves, fine dust and wall deposits are different cleaning problems. Choose intake and basket capacity for bulky debris, then inspect the filter specification for finer material. Check whether an optional fine filter reduces usable capacity or needs more frequent rinsing.
For walls and the waterline, look for repeatable coverage on the same surface type as your pool. A single climb in a demonstration is not a full cleaning cycle. Steps, ledges and sharp corners may still need manual brushing, so include that remaining work in the comparison.
