What changes the decision
Check whether vacuum-only cleaning works through all intended rooms without a fitted water tank or pad. Do not assume a software setting removes every wet component from the route. Compare brush design, mapping and dust-emptying options on their own merits.
An older vacuum-only design is not automatically better value than a discounted combination model. Confirm replacement brushes, battery service and app support. If you disable mopping, do not pay extra for elaborate water plumbing unless another member of the household will use it.
The models below are combination robots to assess in vacuum-only use, not machines built without mopping hardware. Confirm that their mop components can be removed or disabled as required; we do not currently have enough evidence to name a dedicated no-mop winner.
Buying in your market: United States
For US floor plans, record carpet area and hard floors separately in square feet, and measure thresholds and furniture clearance in inches as well as the manufacturer’s millimetres. Compare retailer bundles carefully: a spare-parts package is not the same upgrade as a different dock. For multi-level homes, plan where the dock will stay and how the robot is moved between floors.

Choose for your floor plan
Write down the proportion of carpet and hard floor, the height of door strips and the clearance under furniture. A powerful robot that cannot reach a room has little value there. Measure the complete dock footprint with room to open lids and remove water tanks, rather than using the robot diameter alone.
For mixed flooring, check how the exact model protects rugs: lifting, detaching or parking its mop are different solutions. Deep pile may still touch a raised wet pad. Test rug boundaries and transitions during the return period, and keep unsuitable surfaces excluded.
Cleaning evidence that matters
Look for pickup tests on comparable surfaces and longer-term reports about repeated missed areas. Fine dust, larger crumbs and embedded hair are separate challenges. A test on a bare floor does not establish carpet performance, while a high suction figure cannot show how well the brush maintains contact.
Obstacle avoidance should reduce preparation, but it is not permission to leave cables or pet waste on the floor. Compare reported failures for the exact model and software version. Clear risky objects before scheduled runs, particularly when you cannot supervise the first few passes.
What an automatic dock still asks of you
Self-emptying moves debris into a larger container; it does not eliminate bags, filters or brush cleaning. Mop washing creates dirty water that must be emptied, and the wash tray still needs attention. Ask whether rollers, bags and filters are stocked locally before paying more for dock features.
Estimate three-year cost as the purchase price plus consumables, cleaning solution, likely replacement parts and any paid services. Keep uncertain replacement costs separate rather than pretending to know the battery life. A simpler model can be better value when the premium dock saves little work in your home.
A useful first-week check
Run the robot across every intended room, not only the easiest open area. Check edges, door strips, chair legs and return-to-dock behaviour. Photograph recurring missed areas and note the time spent rescuing the robot, removing hair and cleaning the dock.
Keep packaging until you have checked the seller’s return terms. If the machine consistently fails on your layout, another navigation or brush design is more useful than repeatedly changing cleaning modes. Our model summaries below separate positive evidence from recurring limitations.
