The best robot lawn mowers without perimeter wire

'No wire' hides three different technologies, and the right one depends on your trees, your signal and your sky. Seven mowers, grouped by positioning system, with the exact model's reviews where they exist and an honest blank where they don't.

Mammotion

LUBA 3 AWD

The only mower here that fuses three systems — 360° LiDAR, network RTK and dual-camera vision — so a lost satellite fix under trees or a blinded camera at dusk is not a stopped mower. TechRadar Highly Recommended (3000 variant). From £2,099.

  5. Best for patchy signal

    Husqvarna Automower 405VE NERA

How we chose

Three separate signals, never one invented score. Read the full method.

  • Only mowers with no perimeter wire are included, and the boundary and navigation descriptions are quoted from the manufacturer's own UK page — not from a reseller.
  • Camera-only mowers are flagged as needing Wi-Fi or 4G across the lawn, and RTK mowers as needing sky view, because the manufacturer's own pages say so.
  • Prices were read from the seller's page in a browser on the date shown.
  • Reviews are attached only where the outlet tested the exact model. Sibling variants — the 405XE, KR250ES, other LUBA sizes — are not borrowed from.
  • Some links may become paid affiliate links in future and will be labelled. Commission never changes the order.

Questions people ask

Camera, RTK or LiDAR — which is best without a wire?

Camera-only (eufy) is the simplest to install and cheapest for its area, but depends on Wi-Fi or 4G coverage and daylight. Network RTK (Kress, Husqvarna) is precise but needs a clear view of the sky. Fusion (LUBA 3 AWD) costs the most and has the fewest failure modes.

Do wire-free mowers need a base station?

None on this page does. Kress and Mammotion deliver RTK corrections over the network, eufy uses cameras only, and Husqvarna's RS1 station is optional for gardens with poor signal.

Will a wire-free mower work under trees?

Satellite-only positioning weakens under dense canopy. The LUBA 3 AWD's LiDAR and cameras are designed to cover that, and Husqvarna's optional RS1 station helps. Camera-only mowers care about light and network coverage, not sky view.

Can I set no-go zones without a wire?

Yes — every mower here draws virtual boundaries and no-go zones in its app. The manufacturers' pages describe this for each model; we have not timed how long editing takes.
