What we know

Cozmo 2.0 hasn't shipped, so the closest guide is TechRadar's review of the original Cozmo, which it recommended as a fun, clever toy that teaches coding, while grumbling about fiddly setup and short play sessions. Nothing new in 2.0 is covered by that review. The other thing to know comes from CBS News Pittsburgh: in 2024, Pennsylvania's Attorney General sued Digital Dream Labs over unfilled robot orders, Cozmo 2.0 among them.

TechRadar, hands-on, Jul 2018 (tested on the Anki Cozmo (original, 2016); Tested a different model: the Anki Cozmo (original, 2016))

The original had real personality

TechRadar described the original Cozmo as a cross between Wall-E and a digger, and called it an intelligent, fun toy. It loved the robot's expressions, the tantrums when it was pushed over and the way it learned faces and said your name back. If 2.0 keeps that character, that's the reason to wait for one.

Cube games and coding

With the original, most of the fun came from the three power cubes. TechRadar liked side games such as Quick Tap, a colour version of snap, and found the block-based Code Lab simple and addictive. The 2.0 listing still sells Cozmo as a coding robot for kids that works through the app the specifications, so expect the same kind of play.

Setup and play time

TechRadar found setting up the original a tad laborious. The app joins Cozmo's own Wi-Fi, and you type in a long code from its tiny face, which may frustrate younger children. A 30-minute charge gave around 90 minutes of play. Cozmo 2.0 claims up to 30% more runtime and a battery that's easier to replace the specifications.

Orders haven't been delivered

In September 2024, CBS News Pittsburgh reported that Pennsylvania's Attorney General had sued Digital Dream Labs over about 14,000 robot orders placed between November 2020 and January 2024, including Cozmo 2.0. Customers who'd paid up front got no refunds or updates on the delays. The maker's page still shows Cozmo 2.0 as coming soon the specifications. Don't pay in advance on the strength of a promised date.

Our take

Should you buy the Cozmo 2.0?

Best for: People following a product that is not ready to buy. Skip it if: You need a finished robot you can buy and use now.

Sign up for news if you loved the original, but don't hand over money until reviewers have units in hand. LivingAI's EMO is a small, characterful desk robot on sale now, and Vector 2.0 is in stock from the same maker, though the same company history applies.

Cozmo 2.0 is Digital Dream Labs' planned revival of Anki's Cozmo, a palm-sized robot on tank tracks with an animated face that played games with three light-up cubes, learned faces and taught children simple block coding through a phone app. The new version promises a sharper camera, extra sensors to stop it driving off tables, a colour face, a touch sensor on its back and a battery said to last up to 30% longer and be easier to swap.

Cozmo 2.0 hasn't shipped. The maker's page lists it as coming soon and sold out, with only a sign-up for pre-order news, so the improvements are promises. The best guide to what it might be like is TechRadar's review of the original Cozmo. Pre-orders were taken before, and in 2024 Pennsylvania's Attorney General sued Digital Dream Labs over thousands of robot orders, Cozmo 2.0 among them, that went unfilled or unrefunded.

Before you buy

The questions people ask about this one

Can I actually buy one?

No. The maker's page lists it as coming soon and sold out, with only a sign-up for pre-order news the specifications. CBS News Pittsburgh reported that earlier Cozmo 2.0 pre-orders are among those named in Pennsylvania's 2024 lawsuit over undelivered robots, so think hard before joining any future pre-order.

Is it suitable for young children?

The 2.0 page doesn't give an age rating, though it's billed as a coding robot for kids the specifications. TechRadar says the original was aimed at ages 8 and up, and warned that the setup code could frustrate younger users. Under-8s would need an adult to handle the app.

How long does the battery last?

Nobody knows yet for 2.0. The original gave TechRadar around 90 minutes of play from a 30-minute charge. According to the specifications, the new model claims up to 30% more, and the battery is designed to be swapped at home. Wait for a test before counting on it.

What happens if the company stops supporting it?

That's a real worry here. Play depends on the Cozmo app on a phone or tablet the specifications, so the robot is only as good as that app's future. CBS News Pittsburgh reported Pennsylvania's lawsuit over unfilled orders and missing refunds. Only buy from a seller with a clear way to get your money back.

Why consider it: A small desk character you can buy now, which dances and butts in while you work.

The compromise: Owners report patchy voice recognition, and it isn't built around cube games or coding lessons.

Why consider it: It's from the same maker, it's a similar size and character, and it's listed as in stock.
