What reviewers found

There are two independent German home tests. Smart Home Fox liked the navigation and the cut, named it its price-performance pick, and noted auto-mapping doesn't work in every garden. familie.de used it on a tiny, awkward garden and had to remap several times before it reached every corner. A third test, by nextpit, was a paid partnership with Ecovacs, so we treat it as background only. Testers disagree on the edges. Two owners on Reddit owners are happy with it on simple lawns.

Smart Home Fox, hands-on · familie.de, hands-on (Tested on a 20m² lawn)

  • Cut quality and edges

    Not enough evidence

Only Smart Home Fox judged the cut closely, finding it clean and even with good edges, though taller grass was left along raised borders. familie.de was mainly concerned with getting it to reach every corner.

  • Setup and boundaries

    Mixed results

There's no wire or aerial, but automatic mapping doesn't suit every garden, as Smart Home Fox warns. On a tiny, angular plot, familie.de had to map several times and suggests driving the boundary by hand in awkward gardens.

  • Navigation

    Mixed results

Smart Home Fox was pleased with how it found its way round. familie.de found it kept missing narrow spots by the gate and under a raised bed until the garden was remapped, then it got on with the job.

  • Slopes and rough ground

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use measured it on a slope. Smart Home Fox reports it managing slopes up to its rating without giving an angle, and familie.de's garden was small and level.

  • Obstacles and safety

    Not enough evidence

Only Smart Home Fox tested obstacles: it went round grass clumps, small branches and a hedgehog, though objects under 10cm aren't always spotted. No other review we use tested this.

  • Weather

    Not enough evidence

Only familie.de saw it in the rain, where it paused and went back to the dock. No other review we use tested wet conditions.

  • App and software

    Not enough evidence

Only familie.de reported on the app in any depth, finding schedules and zones handy but the mower sometimes slow to show as connected after being switched off. No other review we use judged it.

  • Upkeep

    Not enough evidence

Only familie.de covered upkeep, noting weekly camera wipes and blade changes every four to six weeks, which it thought often. No other review we use reported on it.

  • Reliability and support

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use has run it for a full season or judged Ecovacs's support.

  • Value

    Not enough evidence

Only Smart Home Fox judged value, naming it a standout for the money at under €900. No other review we use weighed up the price.

Verdicts come from independent, hands-on, finished reviews. An area needs at least two of them before we say more than “Not enough evidence”. We don't score robots ourselves. How this works

Good at spotting things on the lawn

Smart Home Fox sent it towards grass clumps, small branches and a hedgehog, and it went round them all, though the site lists objects under 10cm as not always detected. The partnership test by nextpit also saw soft toys and small garden tools recognised, and no-go zones respected. So it should steer round a forgotten toy, but take a quick look round the lawn before it runs, especially for anything flat or small.

Mapping: easy lawns fine, corners fiddly

Smart Home Fox used automatic mapping, which needs little more than a tap, but warns that it doesn't work in every garden and you may have to map by hand. familie.de found exactly that on a tiny garden full of tight angles, with a raised bed to work round: it had to map the area several times before the mower stopped missing narrow spots by the gate and under the bed. If your garden is broken up, it suggests driving the boundary by hand in the app. Either way, there's no aerial to find a spot for.

Edges: a strip is left

Ecovacs promises cutting close to the edge. Smart Home Fox said it got close enough to skip touch-ups, but also that taller grass along raised borders was left standing. nextpit found it kept a safety gap from the borders of its test lawn. Neither measured the gap. Plan on a quick strim along beds and fences, especially if the lawn meets a raised edge.

Tidy cut, with upkeep to plan

At a 5cm setting, Smart Home Fox said the lawn looked well kept, with no ugly stripes. familie.de found that once the map was right, it simply got on with the job to schedule. Height runs from 3cm to 8cm, but it's changed with a slider on the mower, not in the app. familie.de also flags the upkeep: the manual asks you to wipe the cameras weekly and change the blades every four to six weeks, which it thought was often.

Handy extras, and what's missing

familie.de saw it pause and head back to the dock when rain started. It also noticed the app sometimes took a while to show the mower as connected again after it had been switched off. Smart Home Fox notes there's no GPS theft tracking and no voice control. None of the reviews we use has covered a full season yet, so buying from a retailer with an easy returns policy is sensible.

This covers the GOAT O500 Panorama. The O600 and O800 look similar but steer by satellite and have their own pages. The nextpit test was a paid partnership with Ecovacs, so it doesn't count as an independent review here.

Our take

Should you buy the GOAT O500?

Best for: Small, flat lawns with clear borders. Skip it if: You want to avoid trimming the borders by hand.

A good fit for a simple, small lawn where you want no wire, no aerial and no fuss, especially if children leave toys out. If you'd rather not strim the edges, look at the GOAT O1200 LiDAR Pro, which has a built-in trimmer. If your lawn is bigger than 500m², the eufy E15 is rated for 800m² and also sets itself up with cameras alone.

The GOAT O500 Panorama is the entry point to Ecovacs's O series of wire-free mowers. Most of its siblings, like the O600 and O800, work out where they are from satellites and need an aerial in the garden. The O500 doesn't. It looks around with a wide-angle camera and a short-range laser sensor instead, so setup is just the charging dock and the app. It cuts a 22cm strip, drives through 70cm gaps and is rated for 45% slopes.

The trade-off is size and finish. It's built for small to medium lawns, and testers found it leaves some grass along the borders, though they disagree on how much. Cutting height is set with a slider on the mower rather than in the app.

The questions people ask about this one

Does it need a boundary wire?

No wire and no satellite aerial. It finds its way with a wide-angle camera and a laser sensor, per the specifications. Smart Home Fox used automatic mapping, which it says won't work in every garden, and familie.de had to map its small, angular garden several times to cover every corner.

How close does it cut to the edge?

Not quite to the edge. Smart Home Fox was mostly happy with the edges but saw taller grass left standing along raised borders, and the partnership test by nextpit found it kept a safety gap. Keep the strimmer.

Will it cope with my slope?

Ecovacs rates it for 45%, or 24°, per the specifications. Smart Home Fox reports it managing slopes up to that rating but gave no measured angle, and familie.de's garden was small. On a steep bank, treat the rating as a best case.

What happens when it rains?

The mower and dock are rated IPX6, per the specifications, so rain won't harm them. familie.de found it pauses and returns to the dock when rain starts, but warns that the dock also gets wet from a lawn sprinkler, so don't mow with one running.

Can it handle two lawns or a narrow passage?

Ecovacs says it can drive through gaps as narrow as 70cm and supports several zones with their own settings, per the specifications. familie.de set up zones in the app but found narrow spots by its gate were missed until it remapped, so expect some trial and error.

Is there a subscription for 4G or anti-theft?

There's no 4G listed; it uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, per the specifications. Smart Home Fox notes there's no GPS theft tracking, and familie.de found your phone needs to stay connected while it maps. So there's no mobile subscription to pay, but no tracking if it's stolen either.
