What reviewers found

Three hands-on tests: IEEE Spectrum, whose robotics editor plumbed it into a bathroom, Tech Advisor over a few weeks, and Trusted Reviews with its standard dirt and stain tests. All three say the plumbed water station works and makes mopping close to hands-off, and all rate the roller mop highly on open floor. Trusted Reviews found edges a clear weakness. Setup is where they split: Tech Advisor fitted the water station in half an hour, while IEEE Spectrum found only one workable spot and struggled to get a good first map.

  • Hard floors

    Mixed results

Open floors come up clean, edges don't. Trusted Reviews saw open hard floor left spotless but a lot of mess left along a kitchen plinth, and Tech Advisor aced a rice test but found it too tall for under kitchen cabinets.

  • Carpet and rugs

    Not enough evidence

Only Trusted Reviews tested carpet pickup, finding a trace of flour left after two passes.

  • Pet hair

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use tested its pet-hair pickup yet.

  • Mopping

    Reviewers rate it highly

The roller mop earns its keep. Trusted Reviews lifted coffee and red wine in one pass without streaks, Tech Advisor saw dry, sticky stains shifted, and IEEE Spectrum rated the mopping particularly good.

  • Navigation and obstacles

    Mixed results

IEEE Spectrum struggled to get a good first map, with black carpet upsetting its sensors. Trusted Reviews saw it steer round fake dog mess but tangle itself in a cable, and a default setting skips corners.

  • Dock and upkeep

    Reviewers rate it highly

Plumbing takes away routine tank carrying. The maker's up-to-70-day dust-bag claim doesn't cover brush, filter or roller care the specifications, and Tech Advisor fitted the water station in half an hour. IEEE Spectrum found only one workable spot, so plan where it goes first.

  • App and software

    Reviewers rate it highly

IEEE Spectrum found the map editor useful and the live view of where it had cleaned excellent, and both Trusted Reviews and Tech Advisor found map editing straightforward.

  • Noise

    Not enough evidence

The reviews we use don't say enough yet about how loud the robot or its docks are.

  • Reliability and support

    Not enough evidence

None of the reviews we use ran it long-term or judged SwitchBot's support yet.

  • Value

    Not enough evidence

Only IEEE Spectrum touched on price, noting you pay a premium for plumbing integration, though it's often on sale.

Verdicts come from independent, hands-on, finished reviews. An area needs at least two of them before we say more than “Not enough evidence”. We don't score robots ourselves. How this works

Plumbing is the point, and the hurdle

The supplied adapters made fitting the water station easy for IEEE Spectrum, but the only workable spot in the house was between a toilet and a pedestal sink. Any other bathroom would have meant drilling cabinets. Tech Advisor took about 30 minutes and slid the station under a cabinet toe kick, though it still stuck out a little. Trusted Reviews suggests you may want a plumber. As Tech Advisor advises, check SwitchBot's compatibility guide and pick the spot before you order.

A roller mop that really scrubs

Trusted Reviews saw coffee and red wine lifted in one pass without streaks, dried ketchup gone after three and a muddy mark cleared on another go. Tech Advisor found the roller's pressure and spin shifted dry, sticky stains as well as wet spills, and IEEE Spectrum rated the mopping particularly good. The roller is rinsed as it turns, so it isn't spreading dirty water around. On hard-floored kitchens and hallways, this is the part that earns its keep.

Edges are the weak spot

The roller sits slightly off-centre, and Trusted Reviews found it left a gap round the sides of rooms. Vacuuming along a kitchen plinth left a lot of mess, even with the edge-avoiding setting switched off. On carpet, a trace of flour stayed after two passes, though open hard floor came up spotless. Tech Advisor aced a rice test but found the robot too big to get under kitchen cabinets, where crumbs collect. Keep a cordless vacuum for edges and kick spaces.

The first map may need patience

IEEE Spectrum's first mapping run ended with the robot forgetting its map after a rescue, and the second skipped several rooms beyond an open doorway. Black patterned carpet also upset its drop sensors. The app's editor fixed most of it, letting you mark carpets, draw rooms and add furniture. Trusted Reviews and Tech Advisor found map editing straightforward. Trusted Reviews warns that a collision-reducing mode, on by default, skips corners and edges, so switch it off.

Two docks, very few chores

Trusted Reviews estimates about two months without intervention after setup, but that's not two months free of brush, filter and roller care. The water station runs on a battery that the robot charges, though Trusted Reviews' arrived flat and needed a USB-C charge first. The robot avoided a fake dog mess but tangled itself in a cable. Only one floor of a multi-level home can have a water station. IEEE Spectrum expects to empty the dust dock only every few months.

These tests cover the S10 used with its plumbed water station, not the optional tank kit.

Our take

Should you buy the S10?

Best for: Homes with hard floors and a nearby water supply and drain. Skip it if: You cannot connect it to a water supply and drain.

The S10 is worth considering for frequent hard-floor mopping if a suitable water feed and drain are available and installation is practical. Plan the plumbing and both dock locations first; edges, cables and initial mapping caused trouble. The S1 Pro also has weak carpet-hair evidence, so it is not a general carpet upgrade. A tank-based alternative avoids plumbing but restores manual water chores.

The S10 is SwitchBot's vacuum and roller mop, and it uses two docks instead of one. A charging dock empties the bin and dries the mop, and a small water station plugs into a tap feed and a drain, so the robot swaps dirty water for clean by itself and you never carry a tank to the sink. A tank kit is sold separately for homes that cannot plumb it in.

All three testers rate the roller mop on open floor. Trusted Reviews lifted coffee and red wine in one pass without streaks, Tech Advisor saw dry, sticky stains shifted, and IEEE Spectrum rated the mopping particularly good. The plumbing is the hurdle: Tech Advisor fitted the water station in about half an hour, but IEEE Spectrum found only one workable spot in the house, between a toilet and a pedestal sink, and Trusted Reviews suggests you may want a plumber. Edges are weak, as Trusted Reviews found a lot of mess left along a kitchen plinth and Tech Advisor found the robot too tall to get under kitchen cabinets. IEEE Spectrum struggled to get a good first map, with black carpet upsetting its sensors, while its up-to-70-day dust-bag claim does not remove other component checks.

Before you buy

The questions people ask about this one

Do I have to plumb it in?

No, but there's little point otherwise. Trusted Reviews notes an optional kit adds water tanks, and Tech Advisor found those tanks smaller than on typical mopping robots, meaning more refills. Tech Advisor's advice is that renters, or anyone who can't modify their plumbing, should look elsewhere.

Will it avoid cables and pet mess?

Trusted Reviews saw it avoid one fake dog mess but tangle itself in a cable. One fake mess doesn't tell you it will reliably miss real pet accidents. Clear away cables and any pet mess before running it.

Can it leave the mops in the dock for carpet?

No. It lifts the roller when it reaches carpet, and Trusted Reviews says that's by 7mm, enough for carpet tiles or very short pile. For thicker carpet, a robot that lifts higher or leaves its mop behind is safer. Carpet lifting is listed on the specifications.

How often do I have to empty or refill anything?

Once it's plumbed in and working, it normally fills and drains its water by itself. The dust dock is rated for up to 70 days, per the specifications, but how you use it sets the real interval. Brushes, filters, plumbing and the roller still need attention, and the reviews don't give a fixed period without maintenance.

Does it fit under low furniture?

Not very low furniture. Tech Advisor gives the robot as 4.5in (about 11.4cm) tall, and it couldn't get under their kitchen cabinets. The height isn't listed in the specifications, so measure your gaps against Tech Advisor's figure.

Can it mop more than one floor?

In the tested plumbed setup, Trusted Reviews found it supported several maps but only one floor paired with a water station. It could vacuum the other floors. Those reviews didn't test the optional tank kit or say what later software supports, so if multi-floor mopping is why you're buying, check with SwitchBot first.
