Short answer: the eufy Omni E35 is our pick for hardwood and other hard floors. Reviewers rate it highly for hard floors, mopping and getting round obstacles, and its compact dock washes and dries the mop roller in hot water.

If your floors are mostly hard with few rugs, the MOVA P70 Pro Ultra is also rated highly in all three areas and left about half the usual water behind in Vacuum Wars' mopping test. The eufy Omni C28 costs less and reviewers agree it's strong value, but it's weaker at spotting small objects. Compare the live prices in your country, because the cheapest model changes.

The best pick for your floors

Best for mopping wood floors

Wood and laminate don't like standing water, so look for a robot that leaves the floor only just damp. MOVA P70 Pro Ultra: Vacuum Wars measured above-average stain removal while it left about half the usual water. eufy Omni C28 and ECOVACS DEEBOT T80S Omni: Vacuum Wars also found both left little water behind. Avoid robots that test wet: see the trade-offs below.

Best for wood floors with rugs

If you have rugs on wood, check what happens to the mop when the robot reaches one. The MOVA P70 Pro Ultra's dock can leave the mops behind for carpet runs, Vacuum Wars found, and Home Beautiful found the ECOVACS DEEBOT T80S Omni's lifting roller kept carpets dry. Two of our picks need care here: the eufy Omni E35's uncovered roller can dampen deeper pile, Trusted Reviews warns, and the eufy Omni C28's roller can't be left in the dock for carpets. Best for edges, corners and skirting boards

Dust collects along walls and in corners on hard floors. TechRadar found the eufy Omni E35 cleaned right into the corners of every room, and RTINGS found the Roborock Saros 10R left almost nothing along walls and in corners. Just a Dad Approved found the MOVA P70 Pro Ultra's side brush reached fully into corners over three months of family use. On the T80S, CyberShack liked the way its mop roller slides out to the walls.

Best for cluttered rooms and chair legs

Hard-floored kitchens and dining rooms are full of chair legs, cables and dropped socks. The Roborock Saros 10R got the first perfect score on Vacuum Wars' obstacle course, and RTINGS found it great at avoiding pet waste. Vacuum Wars found the MOVA P70 Pro Ultra's obstacle avoidance among the best it has tested, though Basic Tutorials saw it drag a shoelace and run over a hair tie, so pick up thin things first.

Best affordable robot vacuum for hard floors

In the UK, the Tapo RV50 Pro Omni is the affordable pick. Reviewers rate it highly for hard floors, mopping and navigation: Expert Reviews found it matched the pricier eufy E25 in every standard pickup test and saw dried ketchup and coffee lifted faster than by the E25, and T3 found it did its best work on hard floors, with an extending pad that reaches right up to kitchen cabinets. Its detergent cartridge can't be refilled, which both reviewers disliked. See the Tapo RV50 Pro Omni profile β†’

What matters most for hardwood floors

Most robots clean hard floors well. What separates them on wood is how they mop, how they handle edges and rugs, and how often they get stuck. Start with these five checks.

1. How wet it leaves the floor. This matters more on wood and laminate than anywhere else. Look for a mopping test that reports water left behind, not just stain removal. The difference between robots is large: Vacuum Wars measured about five times the average water left behind by one model it tested, and about half the average from the MOVA P70 Pro Ultra.

  • Water settings: choose a robot with several water levels, and start on the lowest one.
  • Your floor's finish: if your wood is oiled, waxed or unsealed, check the flooring maker's care advice before using any wet mop, robot or not.

2. A mop that cleans itself. Self-washing docks rinse the mop between rooms or jobs, so the robot isn't spreading dirty water over your floor. Many also dry the mop with warm air, which stops it smelling. Roller mops keep rinsing as they go, while spinning pads are washed at the dock. Roller mop vs spinning pads β†’

3. Reaching edges and corners. On hard floors, dust gathers along skirting boards and in corners. Extending side brushes, mop pads and rollers that swing or slide out to the wall make a visible difference. Look for what reviewers say about edges, not just the open floor.

4. Lifting or leaving the mop for rugs. If you have rugs on wood, the robot needs to lift its mop, leave it in the dock, or avoid the rug altogether. Otherwise it can dampen the rug's edge or pile. Check how your shortlisted robot handles your thickest rug.

5. Getting round obstacles. Hard-floored rooms tend to be kitchens, hallways and dining rooms, with chair legs, cables, shoes and pet bowls. A camera-based obstacle system helps, but test results vary, so read what reviewers found for the exact model. Clear thin things such as shoelaces and charging leads before a run.

Be realistic about mopping. A robot mop is for keeping floors clean day to day, not for deep cleaning. Reviewers had to pre-spray dried ketchup for the eufy Omni E35, and dried marks often need a few passes or a hand mop. Run it often and it rarely gets that far.

  • hard floors Reviewers rate it highly
  • mopping Reviewers rate it highly
  • navigation Reviewers rate it highly

Why we picked it

  • Rated highly for hard floors, mopping and navigation on its profile. Trusted Reviews cleared its hard-floor test within two passes and rated edge cleaning as good as any flagship, T3 couldn't fault it on laminate, and TechRadar found it cleaned right into the corners of every room.

  • Trusted Reviews found it avoided shoes, socks, cables and pet mess without getting stuck.

Worth knowing

  • Dried-on marks are the exception: Trusted Reviews had to pre-spray dried ketchup, and TechRadar needed full water flow to lift it.
  • Its uncovered roller can dampen deeper-pile rugs, Trusted Reviews warns.
  • TechRadar had it climb onto a low stand and invent a room on its first map, so check the first map in the app.
  • Empty the dirty-water tank often, TechRadar advises, before it starts to smell.

  • hard floors Reviewers rate it highly
  • mopping Reviewers rate it highly

  • Vacuum Wars found stain removal above average while it left about half the usual water, and Just a Dad Approved credits the pads' strong down-pressure. Basic Tutorials saw cola and mustard lifted.

Worth knowing

  • Basic Tutorials saw greasy cream smear at first, needing several passes, and saw it drag a shoelace and run over a hair tie.
  • Carpet results are mixed, and Vacuum Wars doubts it suits carpet-heavy homes with pets.
  • Just a Dad Approved questioned paying more than for MOVA's P10 Pro Gen 2 for similar cleaning, so compare current offers.

eufy Omni C28 robot vacuum and dock

  • hard floors Reviewers rate it highly
  • mopping Reviewers rate it highly
  • navigation Mixed results

Trade-offs to read before buying

  • iRobot Roomba Plus 405 Combo: good at vacuuming hard floors, but reviewers found problems with its mopping. Vacuum Wars measured about five times the average water left behind, with only one water setting. That's a poor fit for wood.
  • Tapo RV20 Max Plus: its mop is a plain cloth you wet and wash yourself, and reviewers found problems with its mopping on greasy or stubborn marks.
  • Roborock Q7 M5: excellent hard-floor pickup, but its basic dragged pad left floors wetter than reviewers liked and can't lift for carpet. Reviewers also found problems with its obstacle handling.

Where reviewers disagree

  • eufy Omni C28 on wood. Expert Reviews found its hard-floor pickup matched the pricier E25, but Tom's Guide found corners and cat hair on wood harder going. If you have a shedding pet on wooden floors, read our pet hair guide β†’
  • ECOVACS T80S Omni and obstacles. Vacuum Wars found its obstacle avoidance well above average and Home Beautiful called it exceptional, bar getting stuck once under furniture. CyberShack saw it confused by floor-length mirrors and drive into a water bowl.

Getting the best from a robot on hard floors

  • Start on the lowest water setting and turn it up only if marks are left behind.
  • Vacuum before mopping if your robot lets you choose, so grit isn't dragged across the floor by a wet mop.
  • Clear thin things first, such as charging leads, shoelaces and hair ties.
  • Set no-mop zones for rugs in the app if your robot can't lift its mop high enough.
  • Keep the wheels, mop and dock clean. Rinse the dirty-water tank often and check the wheels for trapped grit. Maintenance checklist β†’

Questions people ask

Are robot mops safe for hardwood floors?

Generally yes, on sealed wood, if the robot leaves the floor only just damp. Choose one that reviewers found leaves little water behind, use the lowest water setting first, and avoid models tested as leaving floors wet. If your wood is oiled, waxed or unsealed, check the flooring maker's care advice before using any wet mop.

What's the best robot vacuum for hardwood floors?

The eufy Omni E35 is our pick. Reviewers rate it highly for hard floors, mopping and navigation. The MOVA P70 Pro Ultra is also rated highly in all three and suits homes with mostly hard floors.

Will a robot vacuum scratch my wood floors?

Grit trapped in the wheels or a dirty mop can mark soft finishes. Check the wheels during routine maintenance, keep the mop clean, and let the robot vacuum before it mops.

Is a roller mop or spinning pads better for wood?

Both can work well. Roller mops keep rinsing themselves as they clean, while spinning pads are washed at the dock. What matters more on wood is how much water is left behind, so read the mopping results for the exact model.

Do I need a robot that mops?

Not necessarily. Hard floors are where most robot vacuums do their best work, so a vacuum-only robot keeps dust and crumbs under control. A mop adds daily wiping of spills and footprints, which is useful in kitchens and hallways.

Are the same robots good for laminate and tile?

Yes. Our picks are rated for hard floors in general, which covers wood, laminate, vinyl and tile. Laminate seams are sensitive to water, so the advice about leaving the floor only just damp applies to laminate too.

How often should a robot mop wood floors?

Vacuum daily if you can, and mop as often as your floors need it. Frequent light mopping on a low water setting is kinder to wood than an occasional heavy clean.
